SPIDER-MAN HOMECOMING Sequel Will Be Marvel’s First Movie After AVENGERS 4

Spider-Man Homecoming is swinging into theaters in just a few weeks, and if the early word is any indication, Marvel and Sony’s collaboration will bring the Wall-crawler back to the top of the box office. While Spidey’s future beyond the currently untitled follow up to Spider-Man: Homecoming is unclear, Marvel’s already got big plans for that movie. According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the next Spider-Man sequel is going to Marvel’s first film after the fourth Avengers movie.

“We’re just starting to solidify our plans for Homecoming 2,” said Feige while speaking with JoBlo. “We won’t call it that, whatever it is – which is exciting because it’ll be the first MCU movie after untitled Avengers in 2019. It’ll be the way Civil War informed everything in Homecoming, those movies will launch him off into a very new cinematic universe at that point.”

Earlier this month, Feige was uncharacteristically quiet when Homecoming executive producer, Amy Pascal, suggested that Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man could also crossover into Sony’s upcoming spinoff films for Venom and Black Cat/Silver Sable. For this interview, Feige seemed to downplay the idea that those movies would also be connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Right now, Spidey is in the MCU and it’s just Spidey,” added Feige. “They have rights to other characters, and I think they’re being very smart in saying ‘We have to make a great Venom movie.’ They’re off to a good start hiring Tom Hardy.”

“Right now” suggests that the status quo could change. Perhaps Sony will reclaim the solo rights to Spidey when the current Marvel deal expires. Or maybe Sony and Marvel will decide to renew and expand the deal. We know the outcome that we want to see.
