Should the ALIEN Franchise Make the Move to Television?

Could the Alien franchise be making the move to the small screen? On today’s Nerdist News Talks Back we discussed our dream Xenomorph show, along with Miles Teller heading to the danger zone, if we might get more of Thanos’s backstory with Infinity War‘s home release, and the delayed future for Indiana Jones 5.

Jessica Chobot was joined today by Animation Investigation host Hector Navarro, Nerdist editor Kyle Anderson, and Marvel Movie News‘s Coy Jandreau, and they headed into overdrive with reports Miles Teller will play Goose’s son and Maverick’s protege in the Top Gun sequel. Was he the best choice for the role? How much actual flying will be in the movie if it deals with drone technology? And is this a franchise that deserved to be revisited?

We also got word from the character’s creator there might be an additional 30 minutes of Thanos’ backstory included on the Infinity War Blu-ray, though there’s already reason to doubt if that’s true. Either way, do we need–or want–more of the Mad Titan’s history? Are there any extended cuts that really stand out? And just how do we think Marvel will deal with his little universe-halving dusting in next year’s Avengers 4?

One film we’ll be waiting even longer for is Indiana Jones 5, whose 2020 release date has been pushed back as Jonathan Kasdan rewrites the script. We might not be super excited for the movie, but are we still worried by this news? Is Harrison Ford too old for the role now? Should they recast it or retire the franchise? And what would we do with the story if we had the chance?

Finally, Alien could be the next big screen franchise making the move to television, so what kind of show would we like to see if it happens? With the uptick in horror series and Ridley Scott’s desire to explore the origins of Xenomorphs, would TV actually be the best place to continue the story? And why do we think the franchise has struggled after the first two films?

Nerdist News Talks Back airs Monday to Thursday on our YouTube and Alpha channels every day at 11AM PT, and tune in tomorrow for our wrap up of the week in pop culture, our hour-long Nerdist News What the Friday at 1PM PT, exclusively on Alpha.
