Neil Gaiman and DC Will Launch a SANDMAN UNIVERSE Line of Comics

In 1988, Neil Gaiman‘s The Sandman refined mature audience comics at DC, and paved the way for the Vertigo line that followed. After an eight-year run, Gaiman has sporadically returned to tell more stories about Morpheus and his siblings, the Endless. But for the 30th anniversary, DC and Gaiman have much bigger plans: an entire Sandman Universe, with new ongoing titles.

Via Entertainment Weekly, the Sandman Universe line will consist of four new series: The Dreaming by Si Spurrier, Lucifer by Dan Watters, Books of Magic by Cat Howard, and The House of Whispers by Nalo Hopkinson. The artists for each title will be announced at a later date. Gaiman will oversee the line and contribute to the Sandman Universe one-shot that sets the stage for the new titles. According to Gaiman, Morpheus’ successor, Daniel a.k.a. Dream, has gone missing, and the implications of his absence will be felt throughout the four books.

The Dreaming will feature Sandman supporting cast members Mervyn Pumpkinhead, Lucien the librarian, and Matthew the Raven in the lead as they try to keep things running smoothly without Dream’s guidance. Books of Magic will bring back Tim Hunter, another Gaiman creation, as he struggles to deal with his conflicting destinies.

Lucifer’s new series finds the fallen angel in a new hell of his own making: a small town in which no one can ever leave. He’ll also have to get by without his sight. Finally, The House of Whispers will explore the latest addition to the Dreaming, which has somehow found its way there alongside the House of Secrets and the House of Mystery.

The Sandman Universe line will debut later this year.
