THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA is Coming to The CW!

Well, we called it! For weeks now, there’s been talk of whether or not Archie Comics‘ staple Sabrina, the Teenage Witch would eventually show up on Riverdale, the darkly dramatic version of the classic comics series and cartoons. Sabrina was a popular live-action sitcom from 1996-2003 starring Melissa Joan Hart and it rejuvenated the character after years of obscurity. Why wouldn’t fans want to see the character among the Riverdale family? Well fans can rest easy, and even easier, because not only is Sabrina and her magical powers heading back to screens, it’s going to be in her own horror-inspired series.

According to a press release from Warner Bros, the studio and CW are developing The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, based on Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s comic series of the same name. In keeping with Archie Comics’ horror-themed lines from recent years, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is not for the faint of heart. It supposes a reality where Sabrina was the Satan-promised offspring of a warlock and a human woman and growing up in a coven while still trying to live a normal life.

Aguirre-Sacasa will serve as writer and executive producer on the series along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Jon Goldwater as fellow EPs, and Lee Toland Krieger as EP and director. Currently there’s a script order for a one-hour drama series that is said to be a “dark drama” combining elements of the occult, witchcraft, and general horror themes, as Sabrina wrestles with her dual identity as both mortal and witch, and “standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”

It sounds pretty awesome to us, a kind of Buffy adventure series if Willow were the main character. And while it seems pretty unlikely for this version of Sabrina to appear on Riverdale, it’s clear the fans have been heard in a pretty big. The series is expected for the 2018-2019 season region. No word yet if Salem the talking cat will get a murderous tiger version, but we’ll let you know.
