THE ROCKETEER Will Fly Again with New Disney Junior Animated Series

No matter the day and age, the world always needs someone to look up to, a brave soul who can take to the skies in the name of the greater good. Which is why Disney Junior will be giving us a modern take on a classic character with the new animated series The Rocketeer, featuring the perfect hero for today.

The network announced it has begun working on a new family adventure program, inspired by Dan Stevens’ comic book series of the same name. This time, the story will follow Kit: “a young girl who receives a surprise package on her birthday revealing she’s next in line to become the Rocketeer, a legendary superhero who has the ability to fly with the help of a rocket-powered jet pack.” Assisting Kit with her adventures will be “her gadget-minded best friend, Tesh, and airplane mechanic uncle, Ambrose.”

Many people best know The Rocketeer from the 1991 film starring Billy Campbell in the titular role, so this is a big change for the superhero. Disney Junior Vice President of Original Programming Joe D’Ambrosia said, “The vast storytelling found in the original comic books provides the perfect opportunity to create an exciting new adventure series told from a young girl superhero perspective that the whole family can enjoy together.”

Each episode of the show, which Disney Junior says will be targeted at kids between the ages of two and seven, will feature a format with two 11-minute stories, and will also include an original song. It’s set to debut sometime in 2019—and that’s not a moment too soon. The world can use a hero now more than ever.
