RICK AND MORTY Creators Dissect the Ending of the Season 3 Finale

While the third season finale of Rick and Morty didn’t end quite as dramatically as the second season finale did (what with Rick confined to an intergalactic prison), it still left the great Mr. Sanchez in the a prison of his own making. At the beginning of season three, Rick boasted about taking control of his family and ousting Jerry. Now, Rick has all but fallen from grace in his family’s eyes, rendering him powerless against their newfound bond. In a new video released by Adult Swim, Rick and Morty co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, as well as series writers Ryan Ridley and Mike McMahan, talk about how this is in fact Rick’s biggest defeat to date.

Though no one should ever claim that Beth and Jerry’s relationship doesn’t have some toxicity, the writers talk about Jerry’s personal growth this season… growth that we’d argue is up for debate. In the end, Jerry’s only redeeming characteristic is his love for Beth and their children. And yet that’s enough to get him back in with Morty, Summer, and Beth. Rick can barely acknowledge his love for the family, much less express it. Rick likes to claim that nothing matters in the universe, but even he doesn’t really believe it. As the creative team points out in the video, Rick goes through a lot of trouble just to remain in this timeline even after he’s rejected by his daughter and grandkids. Rick’s the odd man out in his own family, and he still can’t bring himself to leave. It’s a tragedy for him, and he’s definitely not happy about it.

The video also touches upon whether Beth is a clone, which the creative team is still pretty cagey about. That seems to indicate that it could once again be a major plot point, and as McMahan notes in the video, the writers are already thinking about ways to “upset” the Smiths’ partial family unity with their next batch of stories.
