Princess Leia is Getting Her Own STAR WARS Manga

Despite her significant presence in Marvel’s first Star Wars title and its subsequent spinoffs, Princess Leia has rarely headlined her own comic book storyline. But later this year, fans in Japan will get their chance to read the first ever Leia manga serial.

Via Newsarama, Haruichi is adapting Claudia Gray‘s YA novel, Leia, Princess of Alderaan, which is slated to premiere on LINE’s app on this year’s Star Wars day, May 4. A print edition is expected to debut later this year after the final installment of the serial is released on LINE. To go with the announcement, LINE also debuted a few images of the Leia manga, which features the princess’ earliest adventures.

Because the Leia, Princess of Alderaan novel was published last year, we already know most of the major story beats for this adaptation. The manga will follow Leia as she discovers the Rebel Alliance and ultimately follows in her adoptive father’s footsteps as one of the leaders. There are also several connections to The Last Jedi, including major sequences set on the planet Crait and the establishment of Leia’s friendship with Amilyn Holdo, Laura Dern‘s character from the film.

Unfortunately, there is currently no word on when or if the Leia manga serial will receive an English translation, but we wouldn’t bet against it. We’d love to see more of Leia’s solo adventures in either comics or manga format.
