Nintendo and a Vermont Farm Face Off in Real-Life Cow-Milking Contest

Perhaps the greatest achievement of the Nintendo Switch is making farm labor fun. More specifically, we’re talking about the cow milking mini game in 1-2 Switch, which uses the joycon controllers to simulate what it feels like to grab an utter and get some milk out of it. While everybody’s having a good time playing with virtual cows, Billings Farm & Museum — a living history museum in Woodstock, Vermont —thinks we’re a bunch of city slickers who don’t know what we’re doing. The museum sent a tongue-in-cheek letter to Nintendo, challenging the company to a good old fashioned milking contest on real cows, and surprisingly, Nintendo accepted.

In the letter, which the farm posted on Facebook, they write that Nintendo’s game has taken the challenge out of milking. Then comes the smack talk.

“We have 30 prize-winning Jersey milking cows that we milk twice a day, and it is NEVER that easy,” the letter reads. “We also think that you guys look pretty slow. To this end, we’d like to set up some sort of challenge to pit our team against yours to see who can milk the fastest. If you accept, let us know and we can work out the details. The question is: Is your team brave enough?”

Nintendo responded in the comments of that photo, “Challenge accepted!” Nintendo confirmed with Polygon that they weren’t just screwing around and having fun on Facebook, saying that “they’re actually going up there this week.” Who exactly “they” is isn’t clear (Reggie Fils-Aime, perhaps?), but this is a win-win-win regardless: The farm gets a moment in the spotlight, Nintendo looks like a fun and lighthearted company, and some cows in Vermont are getting milked.
