Mark Millar Reveals KICK-ASS’ Replacement, Patience Lee

Mark Millar Reveals KICK-ASS’ Replacement, Patience Lee

Nearly 10 years ago, Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr. introduced comic book readers to Kick-Ass, a young superhero wannabe who inadvertently started an online sensation. After three miniseries and two feature films, Dave Lizewski stepped away from his heroic identity. But next year, Millar and Romita are set to relaunch Kick-Ass with a new heroine taking Dave’s place as the title character.

Entertainment Weekly broke the news about the Kick-Ass relaunch, which will be moving from Marvel’s Icon imprint to Image Comics. Millar also explained that the new Kick-Ass is Patience Lee, a black woman in her 30s who served in the military. Unlike her predecessor, Patience actually has some fighting skills. And as revealed in the preview art, Patience also has two young children of her own.

The ending of the Kick-Ass 3 miniseries implied that Hit-Girl was going to train a new Kick-Ass, but that story doesn’t appear to be directly related to the reboot. Instead of remaining in New York, the rebooted series will take place in New Mexico.

EW also posted the first few pages from the new Kick-Ass series, which depict Patience in costume and in way over her head. (That’s kind of a Kick-Ass tradition.) And while the Kick-Ass comics and movies fall outside of Millar’s recently announced deal with Netflix, we wouldn’t be too surprised if the new Kick-Ass series leads to another potential adaptation or sequel.

Kick-Ass #1 will be released on February 14, 2018.
