Nerdist Podcast: Chris Elliott

The amazing Chris Elliott is on the podcast! He sits down with Chris and Jonah to talk about starting out on Late Night with David Letterman, and the boys discuss the early days of the show and its “almost cable access” feel. He discusses how that led to opportunities like Get A Life, still a Hardwick favorite. There are also stories about accidentally pissing off James Cameron, the movie Cabin Boy (Jonah gets surprised when Chris reveals that Tim Burton left the project to do another particular movie), his strange year on SNL (and his daughter Abby’s work on that show), and the new season of his show Eagleheart on Adult Swim.

Watch Eagleheart on Adult Swim, Thursdays at midnight ET!

Expect Permanent Deaths For AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

  1. Dave says:

So, Chris Elliot wants to make a sequel to Cabin Boy but re-cast it….How about Abby Elliot in “Cabin Girl”? And Chris can cameo as her character’s father. Maybe some sort of seafaring, Pirates of the Carribean-esque jaunt where she goes off in search of him.

I will take an executive producer credit, or cash…thank you.

  2. michelle says:

So sorry to hear about your dad. But so glad that you got the chance to tell him you loved him. My heart, love and best wishes to you. ((internet hugs))

  3. Three Toes of Fury says:

fellow nerdists, check this out if you havent seen it. Chris shares some amazingly sweet sentiments and memento’s of his father.

Im still cackling at Chris’ comment about the family photo magazine cover “fitting that i had a bowl cut”. Brilliant dude…[email protected]#$ing brilliant.
Love the magazine cover and sweet POV shot of your dad from the perspective of the bowling lane.

Peace .n. Reflection of happy memories

  4. Zach Dominguez says:

My condolences to you and your family, Chris.

  5. Zach Dominguez says:

    “They made you eat jacks?”
    “No…but they’re in me.”

Is one of my favorite lines ever.

  6. Three Toes of Fury says:

    I just heard the news.
Hardwick….my sincerest condolences on the loss of your father. My pop passed away last year and it was very tough to face. My advice to you is to do whatever you need too in this time of grief…think back to good memories, go through old photos, spend time with family or by yourself reflecting, work more or less, whatever you need. And as always know that your fans and fellow nerdists care about you.

Peace .n. Picking up that 7-10 Split in the Clouds

  7. @Arabrabbra says:

The intros have become my favorite part of the podcast! Well, I dont want to take away from the podcast content, but ya know what I mean!

Also, never a post script…but Chris we all are feeling for you. Lots of snuggles for you

  8. three toes of fury says:

woot! wonderful wonderful “get” by the nerdist gang.

Eagleheart is one of the funniest shows out there and i am SO glad its back. Its absurdist humor is brilliant and unmatched. Days after its season 3 premier i am still giggling regularly at a scene where chris reveals his plan to take care of a bad guy or two…genius.

Peace .n. You have the right to remain hilarious.

  9. Sara says:

Chris Hardwick, you are the best. Internet hugs.

  10. LJ says:

I was a 9 year old dork who was obsessed with Letterman, Chris Elliot, Paul, Chris, etc. I remember getting special permission to see Cabin Boy. Thanks for having him on. Great episode guys!

  12. Vincent S says:

I just found out about your loss on this page. Hope your step family is going to be okay. I don’t know what to say in these moments.

  13. BassBone says:

So sorry to hear about your dad Chris. My heart goes out to you and yours. 🙁

As for the podcast, I was half convinced I’d imagined Get A Life back when it was first on TV. My family watched it religiously, but no one I knew ever watched it. Thank you for having Chris on!

  14. the above pic makes Chris Elliot look like 1940’s movie bookie or cabbie

  15. @CH Nothing but hugs Chris. Nothing but hugs. 🙂

  16. Beast! says:

First of all, another great podcast – Chris Elliott is one of those guys I’ve always hoped you’d have on, and he was even better than I’d imagined he’d be. REALLY miss Matt on the show, but his sense of humor is very evident on @Midnight, so I certainly understand the trade-off. Hopefully we’ll get all 3 of you together more during @M’s hiatus at least.

As for Billy…I wrote something last night that I’d intended to send through the Quemment link because I didn’t want to come off like I was sending it to everyone here, but I kept getting an error message every time I tried sending it. Maybe there’s a limit to how long Quemments can be. Anyway…here it is, and apologies to the rest of you.

“@Chris – just finished watching tonight’s “TD” and it was the first I’d heard the sad news about your pop. Your tribute to him was incredibly touching. There’s no WAY I could’ve gotten through that without completely losing it, but you did it in a way that was sweet, classy, and positive. I’m most struck by two things : one, that he was able to enjoy the news of your “@Midnight” pickup – I’m sure he was incredibly proud. And two, that he was able to make peace with your mom during the service for your brother that you related to us on the podcast recently. Sorry if this is veering into creepy territory, as you and I have never met. But between your various shows and the podcast (the current ones and catching up with the archives) I spend about 10 hours a week with “you”, so I kinda’ feel like I know you, in some small way. (The curse of being famous and real, I guess – that weird two-way mirror through which we see you but you don’t know us). Anyway, the degree to which you share with us is appreciated, and that’s why we celebrate your victories and hurt for you when you suffer this kind of loss.

I don’t talk to my parents very often – sometimes weeks or even months will pass before we get in touch, but I’ll be calling them tomorrow.

    Thanks man. Be well.”

  17. -Di. says:

That was a fantastic interview. His re-occurring role on How I Met Your Mother reminded me of his existence. He’s a perfect fit for the HIMYM crew. I must check out Eagleheart!

@CH *HUGS* I keep wanting to send you pictures of puppies or stories about weird sex things in Japan. Did you hear about the guy that nailed his ball sack to the ground in Moscow as a protest/performance art. But I’m not sure what would make you feel better.

  18. danny pope says:

I agree with the gentleman above. For whatever its e orth your fans are here for you chris!!

  19. Tom Steele says:

I didn’t know where to post this but my condolences go out to Chris on the loss of his father. He sounded like a great man and Chris was lucky to have him as an influence on his life.
