  1. Bickleton Wigglesworth III says:

i love that buzz aldrin has business cards. i like to image they read something like this…

    nothing more.

  2. Rueben says:

Many thanks! It is an superb web-site.

  3. Kevie (rhymes with Chevy) says:

Did I hear chickens in the background there?

Great podcast. I really want to buy his book for myself and my brothers. Sounds like great stuff. It’s exciting to hear someone talk about going to Mars so matter-of-fact-ly.

  4. Bradley says:

This was great, but I wonder why Buzz kept dodging Chris’s quesion about how going to space changed him personally.

    • David says:

A lot of those guys had some psychological trouble when they came home. He talked about being a mental health advocate, maybe he was one of them and didn;t really want to talk about it.

  5. Lola says:

Well, I’ve finally hit the first Nerdist podcast that I couldn’t finish. I did get a good nap out of it. Too bad I was driving at the time.

  6. Megan says:

Loved this episode and hearing his stories! Got a little nervous (impatient?) at the end (you know, old people) but then he talked about 30 Rock. Absolutely loved that episode. “I walked on your face!!”

  7. Jessica says:

  8. pete says:

This could be an hour-long recording of Buzz blowing bubbles in a bathtub, and it’d still be the best podcast on the Nerdist. Neil Degrasse-Tyson, Buzz Aldrin, Bill Nye… One science guest is worth a hundred actors.

hmmm… I may be onto something, cause that’s about the ratio they’re appearing.

  9. cory says:

I dare you to tell Buzz Aldrin to turn off his phone. I double dog dare you.

  10. Jaime Gonzales says:

One of my favorites…, wonderful insight in NASA, the politics of space exploration, and the inventive ideas to continue. Thanks guys!

  11. Paul says:

This podcast is such a gift. How cool is it that we get such great conversations with people such as Buzz Aldrin where they don’t have to be quippy or have a short amount of time to sell the thing they are selling. Sure they do some of that, but with the hour long format they also get to just talk. And we get to listen.

Also, I’m totally buying his book.

  12. Stagnantvagmusk says:

Not even remotely a NASA nerd, but buzz frakking aldrin‽ ‽ the least “entertaining” episode ever, but my favorite nonetheless.

  13. caterpillarmilk says:

What was he eating? Based on the sound of the food objects in his hand and the sound of the chew I’m going to go with peanut M&Ms. I only chose this over regular M&Ms because of the time it took him to chew and partly swallow before beginning to speak again. I think that pause would be slightly shorter with regular M&Ms.

  14. Justin Biske says:

Any chance you can get some of the crew from the Largo scene to tell their favorite stories from Largo. I know it would be way to hard with everyone’s schedule to get them in the studio, but maybe they could just record their favorite story, email it in, and you could compile them into an episode.

    Thanks for another great episode.

  15. Three toes of Fury says:

Sigh..its right in front of you people but you refuse to see it……snacking during an interview?? cell phone buzzing?? the REAL Christopher J Hardwick would never stand for such chicanery!

This is only further proof of my conspiracy that the entire thing was faked. Thou im now leaning towards small bug-like aliens which attached themselves to the rear of our gangs necks and are controlling them throughout the show…said aliens are known to communicate via smacking their mandibles and creating a low frequency buzzing sound from their bi-sexual external genetalia. I fear we are too late to save the boys and strongly suggest everyone stays 10-15′ away from them at all times…especially when there is a buzzing sound.

    Peace .n. Watch the skies

  16. Patty Marvel says:

@Schmeep – Actually, I think that buzzing phone belonged to the interviewee, not any of the interviewers. Sounded like he was also snacking on pretzels and crunching down on ice cubes while the hosts were too deferential to correct one of their elders.

  17. BassBone says:

Why didn’t Chris ask Buzz about the horrible plastic surgery he’s had or divorcing his wife? How about the fact that he kept eating through the whole damned interview? *smack, smack* Augh! I admire Buzz and love the work he’s done, but this one was kinda hard to listen to.

  18. amysrevenge says:

Great show. I could listen to this guy all day – on the surface he sounds like a rambling old dude, but his stories actually have a beginning-middle-end, and it flows from one to the next so well.

It’s like my wife’s Grandpa, only with stories about space rather than stories about grain inspection in northern Canada…

  19. Flatulator says:

Fun Fact: Buzz got his nickname from his obsession with keeping his pubes neatly trimmed.

  20. Pratha says:

@nate I’m so glad there’s someone here who will yell at the moon with me.

  21. Schmeep says:

So, I loved hearing Buzz on the Podcast.- You all showed him the respect he deserves….EXCEPT with someone’s phone buzzing near the mic! Come on, don’t prove that we’re a bunch of young punk brahs, turn it off!

  22. Patty Marvel says:

FYI, here’s info on the the Mars Cycler Col. Aldrin* was talking about:

@EstimatedEyes – He kinda did when he went on about the difficulties he had with his family and mental health after he returned to Earth. I kinda thought he was dodging the question when Chris asked him twice and he went on about other things, but then he really opened up to Big Papa.

@Chris Hardwick – Um, I happen to know a science professor – one of MY former science professors – who makes an annual trip to the Antarctic to search for meteorites. The info on that is here: This same professor also tried to become an astronaut and was quoted repeatedly in “Packing for Mars” ( ), a book by someone else who would be great on your podcast: . As you can see from Prof. Harvey’s CV, he and Col. Aldrin share and interest in the Red Planet:

Who knows if these two men could travel together, but at the very least one could help the other get sorted for such a trip. His university contact information is (216) 368-0198 and [email protected] . I hope that helps.

*Seems a bit disrespectful to simply call him “Buzz.” The man served his country in wartime and, oh yeah, went to THE FARKING MOON.

  23. B. Mah says:

Very cool podcast. What Buzz said was very interesting. I can’t wait to see the Snoop (Dog) Lion video.

  24. Three Toes of Fury says:

@Justin Hoskie…you must have not got the memo….the Gaggle-o-Gorn (aka “lizard people”) where run out of the Denver Airport (aka: Freemason’s Clubhouse) during the great CHUD* uprising of the late 90s. The CHUDs were, of course, forced out of their sewer homes when all the baby aligators we flushed during the 80s grew to enormous sizes and sent the CHUDs a running. I dont think it will end there…im still optimistic that we’ll see the battle for Denver Airport continue late into the year when Nessy will finish her trek from Scottland and team up with a tribe of local Sasquatch out of Boulder to try and take it over. Nothing will be able to stop them….nothing that is, if my efforts to raise an army of trained super chupacabra’s cross bred with radioactive gigantic rabid sea monkees is hindered in any way. Wish me luck and pray to whatever god you believe in that i dont accentally poke myself with this syringe, placed haphazardly on my desk chair, filled with chupa-sea-monkey dna-modifying goo. Now if you’ll excuse me im going to sit down and get back to work.

Peace & OUCH!!! What the hell did i just sit on……oh sweet jesus no…..

    3To….AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH {transformation begins}

    (*Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers…duh).

  25. Patty Marvel says:

Just got to the part where Colonel Aldrin discusses Wernher von Braun and couldn’t help leaving this here:

    “Once the rockets are up,
Who cares where they come down?
    That’s not my department,”
    Says Wernher von Braun

  26. JetpackBlues says:

    @3ToF: HERETIC! *nerdpunch* 😛

Sorry in advance for the cynicism.

I heard on the radio this morning, right before firing up the podcast, about the Mars One campaign’s reality TV component.

    Great, real Kardassians in space….

Contending with the lower density atmosphere, dead planet core and no electromagnetic field, higher solar radiation as a result, and perchlorate-filled regolith-like ‘soil’ (will get into EVERYTHING, just like Moon dust), lifers there will have to live in pods with excellent protection and filtration that no one’s thought about constructing yet.

So let’s put the cart before the horse, grab Barf & pack up the space Winnebego, and head off to Mars! Maybe someday they’ll lose contact, because everyone died of thyroid cancer, only to arrive with a new batch of Big Brother contestants and find Don Cheadle living like a hermit.

Upside is Mr. Aldrin’s ideas, proposals and explanations are some of the more coherant I’ve heard. Although, unfortunately, I doubt it’ll be a decade long achievement like the Mercury through Apollo programs. More like a century long project, since we’re more prone to looking down at our phones, as opposed to up at the stars….

Finally, guys, I’m jealous that you got to sit in Mr. Aldrin’s presence. Twice.

  27. EstimatedEyes says:

Did Buzz ever answer the question about how going to space and the moon changed his perception of our lives on Earth? Awww, old people…

  28. alanso says:

I wonder if Buzz is all like ‘Man I am so over this moon stuff, I just wanna make dumb fart jokes and watch Danny Trejo movies.’

  29. Come on 3ToF, you and I both know it wasn’t the government. It was the lizard people, from their base at the Denver airport. How many times do we have to go over this?

  30. Moonshine Lunatic says:

Carrot Top as the 12th Doctor! Horrifying! Deliciously, wonderfully disgusting!

The thought of it makes my anus pucker with a force so unbelievably strong that it’s on the brink of collapsing in on itself and forming a singularity that will suck the rest of my body into an alternate dimension where nobody’s ever heard of Carrot Top. I guess I’ll see you guys later.

That said…I would watch the shit out of that show. I’d be lying if I said otherwise.

“So guys, this prop is like a mix between a phone booth and a time machine. For like, when you wanna travel through time and stuff.”

    Moving on.

Buzz Aldrin! Truly amazing. Good for him for pushing for a more robust, well-funded, well-organized space program. Funny how the vast majority of people don’t seem to choose what’s best for them in the long term. It’s the national equivalent of not putting money into a 401K when you “need” it now to pay for satellite TV and an X-Box. The benefits of discovery-based programs and scientific research aren’t known to us in the present and aren’t measurable. Otherwise they wouldn’t be called discoveries. History has shown, however, that they’re absolutely worth funding.

Keep fighting the good fight, Buzz.

  31. Brian says:

  32. Patty Marvel says:

BUZZ FARKING ALDRIN?!?!?!?!? HOLD CRAP, BATMAN!!!! Matt must’ve been as giddy as a school girl! I cannot not wait to listen to this! Now you can tell us what someone who walked on the moon smells like! Cheese, perhaps? 🙂

By the way, Colonel Aldrin was recently a guest on NPR’s “Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me” where he answered three trivia questions about getting mooned:

And here’s the epic video of him punching out the asshole who called him a liar. I’m a non-violent person, but NO one should ever fault him for that – Job would’ve lost his patience with this guy:

  33. Three Toes of Fury says:

Beware nerdists! This podcast never happened! Its a fake which was created by the government in a secret podcast faking studio (hangar 18). It was created using voice doubles and directed by kubrick. Dont take my word for it…the conspiracy is true…just look at this list of subtle inconsistencies from the suppossed “nerdist” podcast:

    * Chris, when speaking of his father, says his claim to fame is that he had a very valuable collection of britsh hats called bowlers..and that he was a professional bowler collector.

    * Matt, when playing the song he wrote “Buzz Burrito Blues”, is playing the guitar RIGHT handed.

    * The voice of Chloe during the intro is clearly being done by Siri.

    * Johah talks consistently about his favorite band, the Dave Mathews Band.

    * Buzz refuses to answer the phone’d in question from will ferrel as harry carey “if the moon was made of cheese…would you eat it?..its a simple question”.

    * Chris reveals the name of the 12th doctor and is extactic to announce that the rumors are true…the 12th doctor will be played by Carrot Top.

Peace .n. I Want To Believe

  34. nate says:

I see you! I see what you’re doing! Return to the night! You have no business here!
