Nerdist Podcast #158: 930 CLUB! LIVE FROM DC!

Recorded LIVE in DC on January 6! About 700 people showed up to this one and it was a BLAST and a half. Also, when we found out MAGFest (Music and Gaming Fest) was going on at the same time we were able to wrangle some special guests who may be relevant to your nerd interests: John Patrick Lowrie (“Sniper” from Team Fortress 2) and his lovely wife Ellen McLain whom you Aperture Lab fans might know as her lovably evil alter-ego GLaDOS. Also, a Portal theme may have been played live…

John has a new sci-fi book out entitled Dancing With Eternity, available here

Science Explains Why Your Cat Keeps Knocking Stuff Over

  1. Matthew says:

Finally listened to the podcast. Great show! Jonah was in rare form…was he doing cocaine?

  2. JE Smithq says:

I’m surprised I’m the first to post this, but the first (2005) series of DOCTOR WHO *was* filmed and broadcast in widescreen 16×9, although I’m sure there are probably some markets where it was broadcast “square.” Maybe it also streams that way on some of the streaming sites, but the DVDs are absolutely widescreen. Jonah is correct, however, that it is not in HD. They only switched to HD during Tennant’s “Specials” season, starting with “Planet of the Dead.”

  3. That was a great night. I can’t believe ya’ll signed all those autographs. I hope you all come back again later in the year.

  4. Bryan says:

Regarding the quement from the teacher who said he wasn’t able to express his own opinion in a podcast, whatever, because it might conflict with his position at the school, I’d encourage him to take a harder look at it. Maybe there’s some specific state or district rules in his case, but I follow a blog of a high school teacher who is open about his name & that he teaches high school. He also blogs about a fairly controversial topic. His school board knows what he does & is fine with it because he’s careful about not inserting personal opinions into his teaching. His name is Hemant Mehta on twitter he’s @hemantmehta and I’d encourage the quementer or any others in a similar position to check him out.

I’d hate to think that people aren’t able to express what they care about because they think they can’t when they can.

  5. Kass says:

Keanu Reeves would be an AMAZING Doctor. He should go to TV for nothing less.

    • -Di. says:

@Kass At first I had t he feeling that you were smoking something. I was going to ask you who your dealer was. But after pondering the issue a bit I now see where you are coming from.

He has played a time traveler. He knows kung fu. He’s played the chosen one. He’s saved a bus full of people when that bus could not go under 55 mph without exploding.

With a resume like that how could you consider anyone else?

      ok, I kid.
But seriously I say Ben Whishaw would make a good doctor. They could make his hair be wild and curly. It would be a call back to Tom Baker. That is nothing but awesome.

      Happy Monday.

  6. Loni says:

That was supposed to be 111 pounds….lol

  7. Loni Voorhis says:

I was so thrilled to hear Matt mention the Lose It app. I have been using it for just over year and last month I reached my goal of losing 111. :oD

    Thank you for your podcasts!

  8. Ross says:

Oh, how quickly they forget: that “Schoolhouse Rock” guy is one of the most respected jazz trumpeters ever, Jack Sheldon. He played with Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton and Art Pepper(among others), as well as fronting his own combos, did some acting in the 60s and was Merv Griffin’s comic foil as lead trumpet in Merv’s band(which is where I knew him from, long before “Schoolhouse Rock”).
He is infamous for his very funny off-color monologues, as well as filthy songs.
And if you really do like Richard Dean Anderson, “Stargate SG1” is a must–RDA’s Jack O’Neill is one of the _best_ smart-asses in TV history.

  9. Chris Hardwick says:

    @Taylor: it’s called Bebot

  10. Taylor says:

What was the name of that app Jonah used for to make those sounds?

  11. 8bitOcarina says:
Here’s a video of both the songs but you really have to watch out for that feedback.

  12. Mitch says:

As giant TF2, Portal, and a giant Valve fan in general I can’t wait to hear this on my way to work!

  13. Raqmar17 says:

Freaking amazing !! I love ellen & John they are awesome !

  14. Raqmar17 says:

Freaking amazing !! I love ellen & John they are awesome !!!!!!!

  15. Ellen sends her love, btw!

  16. Well, they’ll never accuse us of lip-syncing!

  17. Chris Hardwick says:

Sam: I hated having to cut it! There was an unfortunate feedback issue that would have robbed listeners of their ability to hear ever again. Thankfully, audio rectified the situation for “Still Alive.” I loved Ellen and John. They were SO freaking sweet and amazing.

  18. DC_Chillin' says:

Just like to point out that Chris’ “Passenger 57” reference (“Always bet on black!”) was quickly followed by Jonah’s reference at 25:34, of a different movie altogether called ” Executive Decision” starring Kurt Russell and Halle Berry with a cameo appearance by Steven Segal who dies in the first 20 minutes.
    Spoiler Alert.

  19. B Mah says:

It was nice seeing you all at DC. Not B-More…

  20. Maccaguy says:

Good on ya for buying a Hofner, buy happy hunting on the lefty Ric. Even though one of Ric’s most famous players (Sir Paul McCartney) was a lefty, and even though their instruments are made on modern CNC equipment that is easily capable of flipping patterns, for some reason they avoid making lefties.

Maybe they think it will speed up the end of the world?

  21. Emily G says:

The DC show was amazing! Matt Mira CRUSHED, along with Jonah and Chris. So glad that Chris got Ellen Mclain and John Patrick Lowrie on the podcast! Still nerding out knowing that Chris said it was my tweet that let him know about them in the area! This honestly was the best night of the year and the year has just started! This show war seriously the highlight along with Magfest that weekend. Thanks guys so much for such a great night!

  22. Thiago Spegiorin says:

The Cake is a Lie, people!…and Bow Ties are cool.
Well, the Doctor is Cool…that should be enough lol

  23. Sam says:

Why’d you cut out Want You Gone? That song is awesome

  24. Nix says:

Bow ties are cool… and so is Richard Dean Anderson…

  25. Katie says:

I was there at the 9:30 Club and I loved every second of the show!

  26. -Di. says:

I cannot say enough good about Nerdist Live shows. I cannot believe there were 700 people at the show. That’s incredible. Chris, Jonah, and Matt greeted, signed, hugged, spoke to everyone who wanted!
If you have a chance to go to a Nerdist Live, run don’t walk!

It’s not just a show. It’s an experience of a lifetime.

Shameless self promotion: Here is my podcast. I only post it because the latest episode has the quemment I didn’t get a chance to to give.

Twitter me if you have any questions/comments/flames/etc @dihard11

I hope I manage to strike the right balance between kissing butt and self promotion.

    Thank you for your understanding,

  27. George Anzivino says:

    Bow Ties are cool!

  28. El Guapo says:

THE DOCTOR PLAYS FOOTBALL AND CRICKET, TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
