Nerdist: Play – Game Franchises We Want Rebooted

Tokyo Game Show is over and out of the slew of exciting news that emerged from last week, none seemed to impact the internet quite the way the unveiling of the brand new Final Fantasy XV trailer did. What they showed revealed a lot of deviation from the Final Fantasy style that long time fans have grown accustomed to, thus causing many people to pose the question, “Why can’t it be like it was in the old days?”

After the wave of criticism that FFXV faced for not being the Final Fantasy VII reboot that everyone’s been begging for came in and leveled various forums across the web, it got a lot of people discussing older titles that they’d love to see brought back. Special guest Kim Horcher (host of Nerd Alert) and myself went through a couple of old school franchises that we’d love to see revived on today’s episode of Nerdist: Play.

I asked you all on twitter which video game franchise you’d like to see rebooted the most, and here are several of the great answers that didn’t make it into today’s episode:

  1. Karl Ström says:

The Star Wars Game Dark Forces would be nice to see rebooted !

  2. Speaking of Dreamcast … SKIES OF ARCADIA! PLEASE!!!

  3. McGillicutte says:

You know, I might enjoy a Twisted Metal reboot: but my twist is to make it retro. like 60s RETRO. Steve McQueen style, with a “realistic” Calypso.

Also, you could probably do it with Oculus Rift: but man, I Pac Man would be crazy in first person.

  4. Dexter says:

    Wing Commander

  5. Andy Hummer says:

Shining Force, Dragon Warrior, Chrono series, Breath of Fire… basically any RPG franchise from the SNES and Genesis era.

  6. Dan Casey says:

  7. JJ says:

    Shinning Force from Sega

  8. Greg says:

The Suffering for XBox needs to be remade.  You know, so the kids can play it.

  9. kerrell says:

Thanks Malik for another great episode. The final fantasy XV trailer part was so funny. The game franchise I’d love to see rebooted is the legacy of kain series. With next gen graphics and a bigger more open world to explore soul reaver would be even better than it was back in the day. Same goes for blood omen.

  10. Charles says:

Final Fantasy is an anthology series for crying out loud. It’s a constant reboot. And will everyone shut up about VII? It’s not the best, it’s just the one that won’t die.

    • Yes! says:

Complete agreement.  Personally, I enjoyed playing through FFXII the most (thus far).  Blended combat system plus a more mature story was a win for me.  Not that I don’t like FFVII, but I definitely agree that it is over-rated.  For it’s time, it really was something special, but I have no desire to relive it remastered.  I want keep the fond memories preserved the way they are.

    • Jack says:

Disagreement.  FF7 is the best game ever. And needs a remake.

  11. Steve says:

Rocket Jockey and Stunt Island! Both 3D games made before the dawn of 3D accelerators.

  12. Carl says:

A decent Perfect dark remake, with all weapons, simulants and mod unlockables. Damn i loved that game.
