While many of us know and love Japan for its rich history, pop cultural exports, and delicious cuisine, it is also a land with many secrets and mysteries. One of the most terrifying mysteries revolves around a chilling locale nestled at the base of Mount Fuji, a densely settled area known as Aokigahara Suicide Forest. Widely regarded as one of the creepiest places in the world, Aokigahara Forest is the site of a preternaturally high number of suicides, with 54 bodies discovered in its leafy depths in 2010 alone. Now, the grisly grove is the subject of a brand new horror film starring Natalie Dormer, aptly titled The Forest.

In The Forest, Dormer plays a young American woman named Sara, who is investigating the sudden and mysterious disappearance of her twin sister in Japan. Her search eventually leads her to the infamous Aokigahara Forest, at the base of Mount Fuji, where she and an ex-pat named Aiden make the fateful decision to explore the forest’s forbidden depths. They are warned to “stay on the path,” they quickly discover that the forest is filled with more than just flora and fauna; it is full of vengeful spirits.

In this exclusive clip, which you can view above, Sara tends to a wound she has sustained on the palm of her hand. Except when she unwraps the bandages, she finds a creepy-crawly surprise…maggots! But are these larval harbingers of death real or another hallucination induced by the forest itself? Watch on and find out!

The Forest hits theaters on January 8, 2016.
