Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Dead Air’ By Chvrches For THE HUNGER GAMES SOUNDTRACK

Not only did Lorde record the lead single, “Yellow Flicker Beat,” from the soundtrack to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, but she also curated the album to include some of her favorite artists—like Kanye West, Bat For Lashes, and CHVRCHES.

Today, November 4, the Scottish synth-pop trio released their contribution to the soundtrack called “Dead Air,” which is anything but. Fans who’ve recently seen the band play live have probably already heard the tune without even realizing it because, according to Stereogum, they’ve been including it in their sets under fake names like “Richard Pryor,” “Gene Wilder” and “Eddie Murphy.”

Who knew the band were such a fans of American comedians from the ’70s. Weirdsies.

The song’s chorus repeats “We are all just dead air” over and over again, which is both sparse and haunting—two things that describe many of the band’s previous tracks, like “Gun” and “The Mother We Share,” both off CHVRCHES’ debut album, The Bones Of What You Believe.

While singer Lauren Mayberry might look delicate, her voice is powerful and poignant against the group’s electronic-infused melodies. Plus, her fragility offers a nice contrast to the ferociousness of Hunger Games heroine, Katniss Everdeen.

It’s good to know if this whole pop-star thing doesn’t work out for Lorde, she has a potentially lucrative career in the art of music supervision.

The soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 will be released November 18 on Republic Records. When we first reported on the album’s release, we didn’t know details surrounding the mysterious “Track 05.”

Thanks to Lorde, we now know the song comes courtesy of Major Lazer and Ariana Grande.
