Music Dispatch: Prince Just Announced A Very Stripped-Down European Tour

Plenty of people think Prince is one of the greatest guitar players alive today, but for his next tour, the artist formerly known as “the artist formerly known as Prince” will put down his axe in favor of just a piano. Also, 50 Cent claims a bullet in his tongue made him a better lover, Dr. Dre premiered some new music, Donald Trump got in on the fun and parodied “Hotline Bling”, Four Tet says he was in a Radiohead music video, and somebody bought Kurt Cobain’s cardigan for a bunch of money.

THE SHADE

The guitar has long been Prince’s weapon of choice, but this morning, he announced the Prince Spotlight: Piano & A Microphone Tour, which will only feature Prince and a piano.

“Why do this now? For several reasons,” he said in a statement. “For starters it is a challenge. I rarely get bad reviews because this is something that’s been perfected 4 over thirty years. You have to try new things. With the piano it is more naked, more pure. You can see exactly what you get.”

The show won’t be coming to the United States, unfortunately: the tour will take place in November and December for 16 dates in Europe and the UK. [Consequence of Sound; Image via Prince]

One of the bigger plot elements of 50 Cent’s narrative is that he was shot nine times in front of his grandmother’s house in 2000. While that is obviously a very bad thing, it did have one unintentional perk: one of the bullets traveled through his left cheek and to this day remains lodged in his tongue, which 50 Cent said on a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show that “it’s great for oral sex.”

English actress Julie Walters was also a guest on the program and felt his tongue to confirm that the bullet was there, and that was thankfully the end of that demonstration. [Pigeons and Planes]

The video for Drake’s “Hotline Bling” is–by design–very prone to parody. Potential future President of the United States Donald Trump hopped on the bandwagon during his Saturday Night Live hosting gig this past weekend by getting in front of a pastel-colored backdrop and dancing like a real dad. Considering the source material, his moves are adequate, and more importantly, this incident is peak 2015. [Consequence of Sound]

If you watch the video for Radiohead’s “Creep” closely enough, it’s possible that you might catch a glimpse of a young Kieran Hebden, aka electronic musician Four Tet.

“I got invited to go on tour with Radiohead [in 2003],” Hebden said. “They were absolutely huge and I’d been a fan since the Drill EP had come out. I’m in the video for ‘Creep’ in the audience. I followed them really closely from the very beginning. And I was being asked to open for them because they were fans of the record, and it made me think, live electronic music, I should get into that.”

That quote comes from a two-hour BBC 6 Music special about Four Tet’s career, which you can listen to here. [Pitchfork]

If you want a new cardigan, you can probably find a decent one at a local thrift store for a few dollars. Alternately, as one person recently discovered, you can buy the cardigan that Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain is wearing in the photo above–during the taping of their iconic MTV Unplugged special–for $137,500.

The sweater was sold at an auction over the weekend that had a bunch of other rock and roll memorabilia: John Lennon’s Gibson guitar sold for $2.41 million, and a variety of other items were available. [Diffuser; Image via MTV]
