OVERWATCH Animated Short Details Mei’s Tragic Origin

It’s a cold world out there, but Blizzard Entertainment is attempting to warm our hearts with the latest Overwatch animated feature about everyone’s favorite popsicle, Mei.

In their 7th animated short, Blizzard supplements the story of Overwatch with the tragic origin detailing Mei’s experiments in Antarctica with the group known as Ecopoint. Together with her fellow scientists she was apparently working with Overwatch on some very important climate data until their cryostasis malfunctioned and left only her alive. Luckily, she’s not entirely alone since she has her faithful companion robot, Snowball, to keep her company and help devise a way to stay alive.

This animated short comes on the heels of another big announcement from Blizzard regarding the new upcoming map Junkertown—the home of both Junkrat and Roadhog. The Overwatch team released a hilarious featurette wherein the functionality of the map is detailed through Junkrat’s insane plan to blow up the Queen of Junkertown and steal all her gold a la Ocean’s Eleven. Even better, the short pays a stylistic homage to one of the greatest heist-anime shows of all time, Cowboy Bebop.

Both Junkrat and Roadhog are seeing a lot of love lately since Blizzard announced they are adding buffs to both of them very soon. Most notably, Junkrat will now have two explosive mines to increase his viability in competitive play and Roadhog will take 50% less damage when healing and be able to move while doing so. I’m certainly excited about Junkrat finally getting his time in the sun (I’m a proud Junkrat main), but I have to say that any buffs to Roadhog make me extremely nervous since his reign of tyranny was not that long ago.

Overwatch is currently finishing up the last week of the Summer Games 2017 event, so here’s a reminder to make sure you get in your games of Lucio Ball and grab all the skins you want to unlock before you have to wait another year.
