Matt Reeves is Directing THE BATMAN After All, and More Movie News

While the lead-off story in today’s Movie Morsels may cause some film and comic book fans a case of whiplash, it’s good news nonetheless that The Batman finally has itself a director. Plus, we’ve got your latest looks at the new Power Rangers and Alien: Covenant, and just a whole helluva lot more…

The Batman

Yes, I too have been starting to feel like a yo-yo regarding news of the Dark Knight’s next director. For those keeping track at home, Ben Affleck was originally slated to helm the film, but then dropped out, preferring just to star in the project; then War for the Planet of the Apes helmer Matt Reeves was in the running, and then he too was said to have dropped out of negotiations. But now we hear that Reeves will in fact direct Affleck in his first solo turn as the Gotham City’s savior. How do we know this? Because Warner Bros. itself has announced it.

“I have loved the Batman story since I was a child,” says Reeves in an official statement from the studio. “He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”

Say what you want about Reeves work, it always has heart. And heart is the biggest thing that’s been missing in the DC Extended Universe since Zack Snyder launched it with 2013’s Man of Steel. Best of luck, Mr. Reeves. As another superhero’s theme song once put it, “All our hopes are pinned upon you.”

Power Rangers

The new Power Rangers are looking snazzier than ever in a new series of character posters from their upcoming film reboot. What immediately leaps out at me from these latest images, however, is 1.) The Red Ranger is looking an awful lot like Iron Man, and 2.) The Pink Ranger is still the coolest.

Alien: Covenant

Yesterday, we got a sweet early look at Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel/Prometheus sequel Alien: Covenant via an online prologue. Though it’s not quite in the same league of awesomeness, Empire has nevertheless released a new photo from the film, featuring the crew of its titular vessel as they disembark after landing on an alien planet. It looks like a nice place to visit. But in Scott’s universe, alien always equals deadly.
