ABC Developing Marvel Series Starring Female Heroes

The Marvel takeover of television continues. Just a day after we’ve learned about Marvel Studios’ big plans for the Disney streaming service, Variety is reporting a new female led series is coming to ABC, from Young Avengers creator and Wonder Woman screenplay writer Allan Heinberg. The former Sex and the City and The OC writer will executive produce along with Marvel Television’s head honcho Jeph Loeb. It is unknown which Marvel Comics characters are being used, but seeing as how it’s said that the show will focus on female leads, we have a fair amount of room to speculate.

The report says “female superheroes,” plural, so that means this is not likely to be a show based around a single character. Our top pick would be a story centered on She-Hulk, attorney at law–though maybe her law firm could have other super powered staff of some sort. The second most obvious choice to headline this series is Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel. But again, she’s a solo hero, and this sounds like an ensemble show.

Since Heinberg is one of the co-creators of Young Avengers, it is possible we’ll see some of those characters being a part of the show (although I doubt the actual show will be Young Avengers). Most of the female heroes from Marvel’s A-Force series are in various movies at the moment. The ladies of the X-Men still can’t be used until the ink is dry on the Disney Fox deal, so count them out too. Moondragon maybe? (Too obscure?) I’d say Squirrel Girl, but she’s tied into Marvel Television’s New Warriors series.

Marvel has had mixed results on television, with their Netflix series doing well, along with Freeform’s Cloak and Dagger. But aside from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., both Agent Carter and The Inhumans struggled on ABC, with the latter being both a costly and creative failure. Hopefully whatever Heinberg and Marvel Television have in store for this new series will be fare better than some of their previous ABC shows.

Which of the super women of Marvel would you like to see this series be about? Let us know in the comments.
