How Fast Would THE WALKING DEAD Zombie Virus Spread?

And you thought Ebola was bad.

In my latest Because Science, I’m looking at another aspect of a Walking Dead-style zombie apocalypse besides the virus itself — how quickly would a “slow zombie” disease make it through a population? Really, really fast. So fast in fact that the collapse of civilization under the broken, shambling feet of walkers doesn’t seem that implausible.

And taking into account that the show introduced the idea that everyone already has the zombie virus and “turns” after death, the mathematical model would give us even less time to get our zombie-pulping plans together.

  1. starude says:

If zombification takes direct contact with zombies to spread then things might not be that grim.
While unfortunately nothing outside of destruction will stop the carries so it wouldn’t be something to wait out.
Those that survive past the first week or so will mostly be hardcore operators who will probably have fairly long lifespans on the infected earth.

  2. if the water supply gets contaminated i can see it getting messed up pretty fast. Not to mention if particles get caught on the wind.
