Creepy Children’s Rhyme Haunting Family for Months Blamed on Spiders (No, Really)

Imagine it’s late at night and you and your kids are asleep, when all of a sudden in the distance you are awoken by a song. But not just any song, a distant, unsettling rendition of “It’s Raining, It’s Pouring” sung by a child. How would you react? Would you go screaming from your home, or would you think it was all just a bad nightmare? What if it happened again the next night though, and then the next, and the night after that? What if it kept going on for months, at all hours, sometimes playing endlessly? What would you do then? What kind of outcome would be the least awful? That someone was torturing you? That you were going insane? Or that a spirit was lurking just beyond your window?

What if it turned out the creepy music was actually due to spiders? Yeah, really, because that turned out to be the case for one formerly terrified, now very relieved mother in the UK. Though when you hear what the music sounded like you might wonder why she stuck around so long.

In a story reported in The Ipswich Star (that we saw at Boing Boing), a months long mystery was solved when local officials responded to a woman’s report that the creepy children’s music that had been tormenting her had started playing yet again. The town’s rapid response team tracked down the source, which fortunately was not a ghost or Hell demon. The tune was coming from an industrial complex on a nearby estate. And as though all of this wasn’t crazy enough, according to a spokesman for the site, the music was part of a security system that was being set off by some very small intruders.

“The sound is only supposed to act as a deterrent for opportunistic thieves that come onto our property, and it’s designed only to be heard by people on our private land.

“We are now aware of the problem – the motion sensors were being triggered by spiders crawling across the lenses of our cameras and it looks like we’ve had it turned up too loudly.”

Spiders. Spiders were setting off the world’s scariest children’s nursery rhyme. Doubtful anyone saw that coming, though after months of being tormented this is probably as good an outcome as that mom could have hoped for…unless the music was drawing the spiders away from her home! You know what, we’d probably move far away just in case.

What would you have done in this scenario? Tell us how you would have reacted to this creepy song in the comments below.
