Hard ‘n Phirm – "Trace Elements" Video

Phirm and I made this last year as part of a series called CPBS, which stands for “Country Public Broadcasting System.” The concept is that Country Music Television launched a Public Broadcasting wing. The videos have popped on and off the Web but this one’s back up again so I’m posting it here.

The first in the series, “Trace Elements,” was written on a dare from our pal Brian Posehn, who threw down a challenge that it would be impossible to make fun of Country music star Trace Adkins, as he is a blatantly unapologetic redneck. “He does all the work FOR you!” was Posehn’s argument. Our solution was to adapt Trace’s style to sing about an ass-kicking scientist, a topic rarely covered in the vast tapestry of Country music. We hope you enjoy it.

PS – There’s swearing in it, so prepare to be offended or enjoy it more. You pick.

  1. bill says:

anyway we could get a download link of this song?

  2. Trace who? hee hee ~ I don’t listen to country music ~ It’s more like verbal mosquito repellant… When I hear it, I wanna run away πŸ™‚ But WOW! This was BRILLIANT! I especially loved the ‘curious madam’ and bar/bathroom humor. Thanks for making rednecks look intelligent which I know was REALLY REALLY Hard (‘n Phirm) to do! (Uber Talent)

  3. Destiny C. says:

By far, one of the best country songs I’ve ever heard!

    Pretty damn catchy as well.

  4. Julia says:

You guys ought to make some more of these so that I can continue to frighten my parents with my music choices.

    Keep up the fantastic work!

  5. @sewdotcoe says:

I saw this before I was following your blog/webcast on a regular basis and thought it was funny… just saw it again and it’s EFFING GENIUS. Also, Nerdist, you look real purty in them nerd glasses. ;P

  6. Patti says:

So glad the video is back up. So, what exactly did you have to do to convince youtube this was your own song/video? Btw, it’s back in my favorites, and I am now happier for it.

  7. tc2011 says:

    it broken

  8. Max says:

I saw this a few months ago and now it is no longer available! Where did it go!?? Can it be reposted or rehosted?

  9. Lentilboy says:

I love this video, it’ pure genius, however it seems the video has been removed from youtube due to terms of use violation. Is it hosted anywhere else? I must share this!

  10. Theresa says:

  16. mackie says:

  17. Tyler says:

Amazing. It’s nice to see Neil Hamburger’s glasses out in the wild, too.

  18. Gary says:

This might be the single greatest thing that I have ever seen/heard! I don’t understand how you guys aren’t huge right now, seriously. In my opinion, you guys should be reaching everyone in the 16-30 demographic. This is a demographic that I just made up.

Even the video was better in content and production values than every music video that has played on MTV in the past 5 years. Combined. Although a comparison with CMT is probably more appropriate, I don’t have the slightest idea of what in the hell they have on that channel as far as music videos go.

The fact that you could come up with this, all the while managing your ridiculously busy schedule is nothing short of mind-bogglingly impressive. Keep up the badass work, as I will continue to try and spread your awesomeness as far as I can. Anyone who appreciates intelligent comedy should recognize Hard n’ Phirm as one (two?) of the best at it!

  19. Teaflax says:

I’ll be honest and say that though I’d heard of Hard and Phirm back on AST, the name just kind of put me off, but this was absolutely brilliant in every conceivable way. Just the fact that you made me sit through a full three-minute Country song is testament to your genius. I will make an effort to seek our more Hard & Phirmity in the future.

  20. Anthony says:

My entire science class covered in 3 minutes. A+ PLEASE!!

  21. Your fans/blogites are some of the best and I am happy to be folded in.

  22. thrsmnmyhdbtsntm says:

just re-watching this i noticed when phirm counted to 7 on one hand wow that was so great video just made my night and put it into my top 5 of all time like maybe 2 right after unedited “smack my bitch up”

  23. Chris Hardwick says:

Fish, we look forward to having you in the fold. That’s not as dirty as it sounded.

Don’t worry, John! The swearing cancels out the learning.

  24. John August says:

That was great, though I worry I may have learned something.

  25. The Fish says:

I loved this. I laughed my ass off when you put the green titties on the shark. That nearly killed me and of course it shouldn’t have, because that was totally stupid, but it’s the surprisingly insane segments of comedy that really get to me. The timing on the song was perfect.

I have made my fair share of parody or comedy songs in the past couple of years with my heterosexual life mate and a lot of them have turned out pretty good. As far as videos go, I don’t have the budget you might have to create yours. I look forward to being a member of the “Nerdist” community for as long as I can.

  26. RandomKansas says:

This is the greatest song ever recorded. Thank you for posting it.

  27. Murphy1d says:

    Pure geniousity, ya’ll.

  28. i loved this video. i was so sad when is was taken off of the super Deluxe site. kudos on a job well done hard n phirm.

  29. thrsmnmyhdbtsntm says:

i think that is the first country song i’ve ever liked. it is certainly the best i’ve heard. i hope this doesn’t mean your giving up the melodica.

  30. Alex says:

Already downloading it! Awesome song Chris and Mike!!! πŸ™‚

  31. Doomguy13 says:

I remember seeing that on Attack Of The Show! and I couldn’t wait to see it… except… I never found it. I swear… I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time. And the swearing only made it better!

  32. Dick says:

i wish my chemical symbol was Fu.

  33. Cassie says:

Awesome! No one gets my “it’s a science song in the style of Trace Adkins” description until I show it to them. Now I just need this for my iPod. Then I can spread the gospel of HnP on the road.
