GOTHAM’s Latest Preview Has Bruce Wayne Suiting Up as (Almost) Batman

The fall TV season is drawing closer, and our return to Gotham looks like it’ll carry greater stakes than ever before. At least that’s what we can gather from the latest promo for the series’ upcoming fourth season.

Subtitled “A Dark Knight,” season four looks to further the transition of Gotham’s narrative from that of the villains to that of Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and his journey to becoming the Batman. Even though the show has flipped the script a bit when it comes to Batman’s creation, there are some items in that 30-second promo any Bat-fan will recognize.

Just like Morgan Freeman did in the Nolan trilogy, it looks like Chris Chalk‘s Lucius Fox will be assisting Bruce with all of his Bat-gadgets, starting with this rudimentary version of what will become the classic Batsuit.

I am hopeful this season focuses on Bruce realizing he is not quite ready to be Gotham’s defender. In almost all of Batman’s origin stories (thanks to the movies we have plenty to choose from), Bruce realizes what he needs to do to become a symbol for Gotham only after failing miserably at his first attempt at crime-fighting.

The trailer also drops some guiding wisdom from Alfred (Sean Pertwee) in the form of a quote that really sums up the Batman saga: “There’s a time for masks, and there’s a time for Bruce Wayne.” What Alfred is saying is that Bruce needs to utilize both identities to best help Gotham, though over time, we’ll no doubt come to see that “Bruce Wayne” is a mask all its own.

While the cartoons and comics sometimes don’t do his appearance justice, both live action and video games have made the Scarecrow a visually terrifying character. From the jump scares in the Arkham series to the cold and calculating insanity of Cillian Murphy in the Nolan films, Jonathan Crane has definitely earned his place among the greatest in Batman’s Rogues Gallery. From the looks of it, Gotham wants that to continue.

After a rough start finding its path, Gotham has done an amazing job making Batman the cure for the villains of the city rather than the cause. With the introduction of almost all of his nemeses, the evolution of the Dark Knight could come sooner than later. Gotham’s fourth season premieres September 24th on Fox.

So what do you think? Are you excited for Gotham’s next chapter? What or who else would you like to see introduced into the series? Let me know on Twitter or sound off in the comments below.
