Google’s STAR WARS Apps Should Be Required for Every Padawan

(Well, for most of them anyways.)

We’re not the only ones with a proverbial hard-on for Star Wars right now. Even Google’s getting in on the obsession with a bevy of add-on apps to “Awaken the Force Within” so you can feel closer than ever to the side of The Force of your choosing. By visiting this link and choosing which side you’re on, your Google experience will adjust accordingly in your Android Wear, Chrome, Chromecast, Gmail, Inbox by Gmail, Google CalendarSWNav112315, Google Maps, Google Now, Google Search, Google Translate, Waze, and YouTube.

The changes are sure to make any Star Wars fan squeal like an excited R2 unit, but their variations are myriad between the different apps. For example, the Chrome extension will display various pictures from SW, YouTube’s video controls turn into light sabers, and Navigation on mobile apps turns your directional icon into an X-Wing or TIE-Fighter.

For the extremely die-hard Star Wars fans out there, Google Translate can now also convert anything you want into Aurebesh, which is pretty damn awesome. Plus there’s the little touches like this that I wish were permanent when loading Gmail.SWLoading01112315

For fans not willing to give themselves over to the light or the dark side of The Force completely know that you can opt out of it at anytime from the Google Star Wars site. But those of you hoping to make this permanent, it’s important to know that all changes will revert back to normal February 1, 2016. The only slightly intrusive thing I could find so far is the part where it automatically adds Star Wars: The Force Awakens release dates to your Google Calendar (but please: those were in my calendar to begin with). Oh and in Google Street View, it’s a little rebel pilot! Lookithowcuteheis! SWStreetRebel112315

For those rare people who don’t want to convert their computing experience into Star Wars awesomeness, there’s a free mobile app for Star Wars that is, frankly, way too much fun.

As far as free apps go, it’s pretty decent, featuring movie news, soundboards, augmented reality, emojis and—oh yeah!—a friggin’ lightsaber trainer.
