GODZILLA Anime’s First Trailer Features an Earth that Belongs to the Monsters

Ever since Godzilla emerged from the ocean, our planet has essentially been his playground. But what if the Earth truly belonged to Godzilla and his fellow Kaiju for thousands of years? We’re going to find out later this year when the King of the Monsters stars in his first ever anime feature film. Now, after months of waiting, we’ve finally seen the first footage from that movie.

TOHO animation has released a trailer for Godzilla: Kaiju Wakusei, which will be called Godzilla: Monster Planet when it reaches the U.S. later this year. The premise for the film is that the Kaiju overran the Earth in the middle of the 21st century, which forced most of humanity to flee into space in the hope of finding a new home. However, those hopes have been dashed and they were forced to return to Earth. By the time they get back, 20,000 years will have passed…and Godzilla is still very much alive.

As you can probably guess, Godzilla won’t be the only monster left on Earth. It’s unclear whether Big G can reproduce by himself, but there are still plenty of Kaiju left to deal with. And now, the remnants of humanity will find themselves as aliens on their own planet.

The trailer also briefly introduces Haruo, the leading human character in the film. As a child, he saw Godzilla kill his parents. Haruo survived the epic space voyage and led a group back to Earth to reclaim what was theirs. But in reality, Haruo only wants one thing: vengeance. That’s easier said than done when Godzilla is the target.

Godzilla: Monster Planet will get a theatrical release in Japan this November, before coming to Netflix later this year.
