GAME BOY is Coming Back—in “Ultra” Form!

Thanks to the phenomenal success of the NES Classic and SNES Classic, it’s long been rumored that Nintendo is working on a Game Boy Classic as well. While that may be true, retro gaming company Hyperkin has already beaten Nintendo to the punch. At CES 2018, Hyperkin unveiled the Ultra Game Boy, and it’s a dramatic improvement over the original model.

Via Gizmodo, the Ultra Game Boy has an aluminum housing that is more resistant to scratches than the first Game Boy. It also has a backlit LCD display built into the system that can cycle through the RGB spectrum, as well as stereo speakers, a USB port, and an internal battery that can last for six hours of gameplay. Gizmodo also notes that the Ultra Game Boy has been customized for fans who like to use the classic console to create electronic music.

Because this isn’t an official Nintendo release, the name could change before it hits the market. And unfortunately, it doesn’t come with any pre-installed games. However, all classic Game Boy titles should work on this console. The initial report suggests that it may also play Game Boy Color titles as well.

The Ultra Game Boy is expected to be released this summer with a $100 retail price; that’s about $10 higher than the cost of a Game Boy when it launched in 1989. But with all of these improvements, we think that the Ultra Game Boy is more than worth it.
