GAMBIT Plot Rumors Emerge and They’ve Got Lots of X-MEN Characters

While the mutant movie machine is rolling along at Fox – X-Men: Dark Phoenix, New Mutants, and Deadpool 2 are all in some form of production as we speak – the Gambit movie seems stuck in perpetual limbo. Although Channing Tatum is still set to star in the film as the Cajun X-Man, at the moment, no director is attached.

We never learned a whole lot on what the actual movie was (or maybe still is) going to be about, it was always overshadowed by the drama of who was or wasn’t directing the film, and why. But judging by this RUMOR (not confirmed at all), reported on by the folks over at Slashfilm (via Slashreport) there was, and still could be, quite a lot about the Gambit movie to get Marvel Mutant fans excited.

The report states that the film would be “the  Ocean’s 11” of superhero movies. This is kind of expected, as Remy Lebeau’s original role in the comics was as part of a cabal known as the Thieves Guild, in a decades-long feud with another New Orleans based guild, the Assassins. Also, most superhero movies these days need a sub-genre, and heist film is one we haven’t seen yet from a superhero movie, unless you count Ant-Man.

What should really get fans excited is that the rumored Gambit plot would shine a spotlight on several other X-Men comics mutants, many of whom haven’t had much of a chance to show off their stuff in any of the  X-Men movies. Among the mutants set to appear based on the script are Rictor (who appeared as a young boy in Logan), Fifolet, Dani Moonstar (who will be in the upcoming New Mutants movie), Multiple Man (who last appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand), Marrow, and a “blue X-Men regular” who could be Mystique, Beast, or Nightcrawler. Given his power set, I’d bet it would be Nightcrawler.

Gambit’s star crossed love affair with fellow mutant Bella Donna Boudreaux also figures into the film, which makes sense, since that is a huge aspect of the character’s backstory. As for the bad guy in the film? It’s said to be none other than Mister Sinister, one of the biggest X-Men villains who has yet to be used in the films, and who is long overdue. He was rumored to appear in Logan, but those rumors turned out to be false.

Gambit will apparently also make references to the events of  X-Men: Days of Future Past and  X-Men: Apocalypse, which means we might finally see some decent continuity in the soft-rebooted X-Men universe. The movie currently only has a star and no director, and no doubt Fox is waiting to see how the three X-Men universe movies they have coming in 2018 do before pulling the trigger. But based on these descriptions, if they’re true, I think we should all officially be excited for a Gambit movie now.
