FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS’ Rhys Darby Makes for JAMES BOND’s Silliest Archenemy Ever

We might never reach a consensus on the greatest James Bond villain of all-time, but Goldfinger would be on anyone’s short list. And of all the many classic scenes from the franchise, that in which the gold-loving fiend taunts 007 with a slow-developing bisection by laser might be the most famous. It’s a tense showdown between two smooth-talking foes, a moment so perfect it couldn’t possibly be improved upon… that is unless you have talented voice actors recreating the scene as a hilarious conversation between two idiots.

In the latest clip from our Alpha series Talkin’ Toons, host Rob Paulsen was joined by Rhys Darby, whose most famous credits to date include HBO’s Flight of the Conchords, on which he played band manager Murray, and Taika Waititi’s What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. The two then went toe-to-toe in a competition of absurdity during one of the most iconic movie scenes of all time, with Rob playing a far less sophisticated version of Sean Connery’s James Bond, and Darby filling in as his archenemy Goldfinger as his ufologist character Steve Whittle from the series Short Poppies.

Would that scene be nearly as famous if James Bond and Goldfinger were two huge goofballs? No, but it’s a hell of a lot funnier.
