J.K. Rowling Won’t Tell Anyone What Newt Scamander’s Patronus is

We’re still more than a year away from the second installment of Newt Scamander’s adventures in magical monster husbandry, but that hasn’t stopped fans from around the world from wondering what’s in store for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2. Recently, J.K. Rowling took to Twitter to interact with fans and answer some questions but (as Comicbook.com points out) she doesn’t want to divulge too much about a particular query.

What could that “big spoiler” of Newt’s Patronus be? Well, at this point it’s hard to tell since Rowling has always been pretty great at keeping details under wraps (when she wants to). For the time being, all we really know is that the upcoming film (FBAWTFT2? Man, acronyms are supposed to be short and helpful) will pick up after the events of the first with Johnny Depp reprising his role as evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald and will feature Jude Law as a younger Albus Dumbledore. Which, side note, is some pretty spot on casting/good timing for the 44 year old actor to be playing the 40-something Dumbledore in the 1920s.

Rowling’s tweet will undoubtedly have fans speculating what Newt’s Patronus charm will be for the next year or so and Lord Voldemort knows that there’s more than enough creatures to choose from. Chances are, due to Newt’s connection to his collection of creatures, his will be a magical one because I can’t see him ending up with–oh, I don’t know, let’s say–something like the damn stupid, crappy, useless piece of s**t, totally uncool, garbage rodent vole that Pottermore gave me! [Listen, I wasn’t hoping for much when I took the quiz. I wasn’t even greedy for something magical. Seriously, why can’t I just be a rhino?]

And let’s not forget that popular fan theory that Newt is actually Buckbeak.

As far as the magical creatures go–Nerdist’s resident Harry Potter creature expert Michael “Hagrid” Walsh compiled incredibly detailed breakdowns of the creatures that appear in the film but it’s doubtful that Newt’s will be something we’ve already seen. Still, there are A LOT to choose from.

Part 1: Introduction and “creatures” that don’t belong in a zoo
Part 2: Numbers 72-51, from a normal looking fish to a beautiful weird insect
Part 3: Numbers 50-31, from the cuddly to the deadly
Part 4: Numbers 30-11, all of the water demons
Part 5: The top ten

Considering Rowling called it a “big spoiler,” the answer is probably pivotal to the film and, in the HPCU, that usually means a climactic CGI showpiece. So here’s my theory:

Newt Scamander, caretaker to every bit of monsterdom, will use his Patronus in a fight… But it won’t just be one animal, it will be every animal he cares for. His proximity to and love of all creatures will manifest itself in a stampede-like blast of dementor-shredding light that’ll either surprise everyone or be a spell Newt already knows but is wary to use.

Or, maybe it’s a vole. Almost everyone I know who took the Pottermore quiz got stuck with a vole. Everyone’s a vole.

What are your thought’s on Newt’s Patronus? If my theory is correct, think Rowling will let me pick my own? “ExpectoRhinosus!” here I come! Let’s discuss in the comments below!
