Falcon Heavy Launch’s Awesomeness Chronicled in This Video Set to David Bowie’s “Life on Mars”

Last month, SpaceX captured our collective attention with the successful Falcon Heavy launch. SpaceX founder Elon Musk even added a cheeky touch by launching his own Tesla Roadster into orbit as Falcon Heavy’s payload, with a dummy named “Starman” behind the wheel for its galactic voyage. Now, SpaceX has released a new Falcon Heavy time lapse video set to David Bowie‘s classic “Life on Mars,” which makes the accomplishment seem even more impressive.

Via Laughing Squid, the video offers multiple perspectives of the Falcon Heavy launch, from the internal preparations at SpaceX to the viewers at home and the large crowd that gathered to see history in person. According to SpaceX, Falcon Heavy is “the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two.” It could even pave the way for even more powerful rockets. We’re still far away from human colonization in space, but this event makes the impossible dream feel achievable.

At the very end of the video, SpaceX shared one of its greatest (and somewhat overlooked) Falcon Heavy accomplishments: the successful landing of two side boosters, which can be used again for future launches. There were also a few tantalizing glimpses of the Roadster in space. We especially loved this shot of the Roadster’s dashboard, which features a very overt reference to Douglas AdamsHitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
