Donald Glover’s SNL Sketch Calls Out the Lack of Black STAR WARS Characters

What do you get when you host a “galactic summit for all black humans” in the galaxy far, far away? Sadly a whole lot of empty seats. And on the most recent Saturday Night Live host, Solo: A Star Wars Story star Donald Glover mocked the lack of black Star Wars characters–in a mostly empty Naboo hotel ballroom–when Lando Calrissian organized the depressingly sparse soiree.

Giving us a first taste of his performance in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story, Glover’s Lando–who also took the time to explain how he makes things “work” with strange female aliens–organized an event to answer the question “where the hell are all the black people in space?” Turns out the answer is nowhere, because while there are “lots of lizard men wearing vests,” there are “just four black people though.” That meant a (timeline appropriate) appearance from Saw Gerrera (man does Kenan Thompson look like him), and given how literally no one else on Jedha looked like him, it’s impressive he successfully hid on the planet.

We haven’t seen Lando in the sequel trilogy yet (sigh), but if he’s still holding this summit he’s going to be real excited to meet Finn. And Val in Solo. It’s still not enough. Um, if Lucasfilm is still having trouble casting more black characters, at the very least maybe they should look a little bit harder for that “black human planet” Lando’s hoping is out there.
