DJ Earworm Drops 2016’s Top Pop Mash-Up

It’s easy to argue that 2016 has been an absurd year that’s run the gamut from thrilling to downright horrible (RIP David Bowie, RIP Leonard Cohen, RIP Prince, RIP to so many other greats). But the pop music scene keeps defiantly dancing through any and all turmoil, which is captured perfectly by DJ Earworm’s annual year-end top pop mash-up, United State of Pop 2016.

Music producer and self-proclaimed “mashup artist” DJ Earworm has again grabbed the tip of the year’s musical iceberg, dropped it in a blender, and poured out a 4-minute mash-up cocktail of top Billboard songs and their respective music videos. The mash-up track, which is subtitled “Into Pieces” and starts off with the lyric “The whole year put you in the worst mood,” from the Weeknd and Daft Punk’s “Star Boy,” feels more fast-paced than last year’s song, but less dynamic. That’s probably because “Into Pieces” features half as many artists, and three tracks—”Stressed Out,” “Heathens,” and “Ride”—from Twenty One Pilots.

The track, which comes via Laughing Squid, is infused with energy throughout from tastes of dancy hits like Bruno Mars‘ “24K Magic” and DJ Snake and Justin Bieber’s “Let Me Love You.” There’s also a bevy of recognizable voices, including Justin Timberlake’s (“Can’t Stop the Feeling”), Rihanna’s (“Needed Me” and “Work”), and Drake’s (“One Dance”). Time and The Verge have both noted that the mash-up is missing one thing a 2016 musical cocktail should have: a little bit of Beyoncé’s Lemonade. DJ Earworm told the Verge that “‘while [she] had a really big cultural moment, it didn’t translate into smash singles.” Still though, she managed to smash plenty of other things.

If you want to check out the full list of songs included in the mash-up, it’s provided by DJ Earworm beneath the YouTube video. And while you’re scrolling through the tracks, going through all the feels, let us know what you’re experiencing in the comments below!
