DEADPOOL Screenwriters Offer an Update on the Sequel

Last year, no one expected Deadpool to be one of 2016’s biggest blockbusters, or that the film would be up for several honors during award season. It’s about as strange and bizarre as any aside in Deadpool itself. And while Deadpool 2 is already in the works, it may not be quite as far along as we had hoped.

While speaking with Deadline, Deadpool screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick said that the script for the sequel isn’t finished yet. “We’re pushing forward very hard,” said Reese. “I think by every account we will shoot it this year, and we’re on our multiple draft now. It’s taken different twists and turns, but it’s really coalescing, and we’re very, very excited.”

Wernick added that the post-credits scene with Ryan Reynolds’ title character promising to introduce Cable in the sequel was the equivalent of being “the athlete who guarantees victory before the game.” And while the duo hinted that Cable won’t be the only new addition to the cast, they made it clear that Deadpool 2 will still very much belong to the title character. “It’ll be a solo movie,” said Reese. “It’ll be populated with a lot of characters, but it is still Deadpool’s movie.”

As for whether Deadpool could show up in one of the X-Men films, Reese noted that “it hasn’t been planned yet, but I don’t think it would be too hard to drop Deadpool into another movie.”

Assuming that Deadpool 2 begins filming this year, it may be released in 2018.
