CLOVERFIELD 3 a.k.a. GOD PARTICLE Might Not Head to Theaters After All

Last week we finally got our first piece of actual marketing for the mysterious Cloverfield 3 (which may or may not be called God Particle) in the form of a coded website. But if you thought that was the first good sign the film was finally on track to come to theaters this April, don’t get too excited, because reports say it might never get a theatrical release at all. God Particle could wind up heading straight to Netflix.

Via SlashfilmThe Hollywood Reporter has reported based on talks with unnamed sources that Paramount is considering selling the movie, which hasn’t released any trailers or images yet, and whose premiere has been pushed back multiple times, to Netflix. While this might seem to suggest that Paramount doesn’t believe in God Particle, it could also indicate that the film is simply not in line with the studio’s evolving brand. That said, The Hollywood Reporter adds that its sources also implied the movie does need work, which producer J.J. Abrams could be too busy to take care of now that he’s directing Star Wars Episode IX.

So the movie might be a dud or it might simply be a brilliant but decidedly niche piece of work, but either way it looks like it might never get a full theatrical release. Of course that doesn’t mean it won’t find an audience on Netflix, even if it will be a bummer not to see some giant monsters on the big screen.

What do you make of all of this? Does the movie sound like a dud, or is Paramount just making a smart business decision? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
