CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND Rerelease Teased in Eerie Trailer

In celebration of this past World UFO Day, a very interesting video hit the internet. Sony released a mysterious teaser trailer under the title “This Means Something,” ostensibly referencing the 1977 sci-fi hit, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The ominous title had fans of the film up in arms, trying to figure out what Sony was trying to promote. This was particularly hard given that the teaser gave away very little beyond showing a spooky aircraft and UFO encounter on an air traffic controller’s screen. Take a look at the teaser for yourself to see what I mean:

Was Sony announcing a sequel? Rebooting the series? After all, the film’s 40th anniversary is this year, so it would make sense for a studio exec to decide to reinvigorate the series in the wake of a big anniversary. For those of you who are a bit tired of sequels and reboots, rest easy. As Screen Crush reports, the teaser is probably only meant to herald the film’s re-release into movie theaters, in celebration of 40 years of being one of the best alien films out there.

Technically, Close Encounters turns 40 in November of this year, but the film will actually grace theaters starting September 1st. If you want to stay in the loop on Sony’s re-release campaign for the movie, you can sign up at WeAreStillNotAlone.com.

This rerelease is a refreshing change from the reboot/remake/sequel culture Hollywood is in these days. While there’s nothing wrong with a good sequel or reboot, it’s exciting to see Sony celebrating an older film for what it was, not trying to update it or turn it into a giant franchise. Plus, for those of us who never got the opportunity to see Close Encounters and its alien goodness on the big screen, this is a really exciting way for us to engage in the film in a new way. It’s a film that has held up really well since its release in 77, and new and old fans alike are sure to love a chance to see film on the big screen.

Are you excited about Close Encounters returning to theaters? What other films would you like to see studios bring back to the big screen? Let us know in the comments!
