Chris Hardwick Signs 3-Picture Deal at Blumhouse

Nerdist founder Chris Hardwick is a busy, busy guy. Between producing and hosting shows like The Wall, Talking with Chris Hardwick, and the upcoming The Awesome Show, he’s also launched a new national comedy tour, his production company Fish Ladder has several TV shows in the works, and–oh yeah–he hosts the Nerdist Podcast right here on this very network. Like I said, busy guy, but now you can add “horror movie maker” to his list of credits! Chris is launching a new film production shingle called “Spitball” and has partnered with Blumhouse Productions on three upcoming films.

The first-look deal includes movies that will be produced under the Blumhouse banner, plus Chris will be directing one of the films and heavily involved in the other two. The collaboration was first hinted at in this week’s Nerdist Podcast episode with Blumhouse founder Jason Blum. (Listen to the episode here! The specific passage starts at the 1:12:38 mark.) That episode is what led to the partnership, according to Blum. “I was so inspired talking genre films with Chris on Nerdist, that by the end of the interview I asked if he would consider doing a film with us,” he explained. “We met one more time later in the week and decided to make two more. Chris is a passionate genre fan and I feel lucky to be in business with him.”

Chris said of the announcement: “I’m a die-hard horror fan and have always wanted to be in the horror business. Jason is an AMAZING entrepreneur, a super nice guy, and a brilliant producer who is responsible for putting out SEVERAL of my favorite films, so I am beyond excited for this partnership!”

Blumhouse has produced some of the most acclaimed and successful genre movies of the past several years, getting major mileage out of their philosophy of “low-budget, high-concept” films that give filmmakers a chance to be creative. The company made its name with the Paranormal Activity franchise and has also produced horror juggernauts such as the Insidious, Sinister, and The Purge series in addition to mega-hits like Split, Get Out, and the Oscar-nominated Whiplash.

Chris Hardwick and Blumhouse Productions seems like a match made in darkly dreaming heaven to us!
