The Secret Life of Bruce Lee: A Real Life Superhero

by Sharon Lee

Superheroes usually exist in the realm of fantasy and comic books, but Bruce Lee mastered his mind, body and spirit to achieve real life Superhero status during his short 32 years on planet Earth. What was his secret power? Applied Philosophy.

As a teen studying kung fu in Hong Kong, Bruce Lee was taught the ancient wisdom of Taoism and Asian philosophies that were the foundation of his martial arts training. He went on to study philosophy in college and eventually developed his own martial art called Jeet Kune Do or The Way of the Intercepting Fist.

Most people know him as the famous kickass action movie star, but he was also an author, teacher, artist and philosopher. He was a prolific writer who documented his physical, mental and spiritual development so meticulously that he left behind hundreds of pages of writings that reveal exactly how he became Bruce Lee.

Here’s his most famous philosophical quote: Be water, my friend:

“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless—like water.  Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup; you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle; you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot.  Now water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

The “Be Water” principle is Bruce Lee’s advice for achieving a “flow” state where you are moving through life and all obstacles smoothly and easily. If you approach life like a hammer, your only tool will be to bang your head against things—which is very painful after a while. If you approach life like water, you can crash like a wave, but you can also learn to float and flow around your problems. The next time you have a conflict in your life, visualize yourself becoming water and flowing around your obstacle. This really works—try it out.

Lucky for us, his daughter Shannon Lee is sharing her dad’s wisdom for self-actualization with the world.  Shannon Lee and Sharon Lee, a cultural anthropologist, co-host the Bruce Lee Podcast, which shares stories and lessons from Bruce on living with purpose and harmony.

Today we’re excited to announce that The Bruce Lee Podcast has joined the Nerdist family! It’s kind of like having your very own Sifu at Nerdist. THEY’ll be sharing nuggets of Bruce’s wisdom regularly and even challenging you to use the philosophy in your own life.

Check out Chris Hardwick talking to Shannon and Sharon on their first episode as a part of the Nerdist Podcast Network. Chris shares stories about his fitness and mindfulness routines, and you’ll also get to hear what Chris has in common with Bruce Lee.
