Nutmeg Is the YA BREAKING BAD Comic You Never Knew You Needed

Do you miss Breaking Bad but wish that it was more diverse and centered on rad teen girls? Well then, what you need is Nutmeg, or as we fondly call it “Baking Bad.” It’s a sweet sequential story about badass middle school girls running a crime ring based solely on delicious baked goods, and yes, Jackie Croft and James Wright’s comic is just as delectable as it sounds. Published by Action Lab Entertainment, the book’s word of mouth popularity has seen the creators release nine issues, three trade paperbacks, and now they’re Kickstarting a gorgeous hardcover collection of the first two acclaimed story arcs!

Nutmeg tells the story of Poppy Pepper and new friend Cassia Caraway as they team up to take down her middle school baking rivals, Saffron Longfellow and the Lady Rangers. During their search for the perfect brownie, the pair stumble upon an addictive recipe that makes their baking an instant smash with their peers, leading them on a dangerous path towards the criminal underworld.

Inspired by teen detectives like Nancy Drew and Encyclopedia Brown, Nutmeg is a fun take on your classic crime story, one that subverts tropes, makes you hungry, and throws you into the center of the action. Trust us, this cute comic is as much of a treat as the baked goods that our peculiar protagonists create. To celebrate the Kickstarter, Jackie and James shared some exclusive process art with us, depicting an integral moment in team Nutmeg’s origin story.

As for Jackie and James, they’re excited to share Nutmeg with a brand new audience and get the book into schools and libraries. “We’re very excited about being able to present the beginning of the Nutmeg saga in a format that will stand the test of time and find many new readers for years to come. Thank you for joining us on this long, strange trip to get here and we hope to see you at the finish line,” Crofts and Wright told us.

You can support the Kickstarter here. Will you be checking out this comic? Are you excited to discover the addictive world of teen bakers? Just happy to see more diverse comics out in the wild? Let us know in the comments!
