Does This BLADE RUNNER 2049 Clip Hint at Life Beyond Earth?

The future isn’t what it used to be. Back in 1982, Ridley Scott shared his vision of the days to come in Blade Runner, and fans will soon get a chance to revisit that world in director Denis Villeneuve‘s Blade Runner 2049. While we expect to see how Los Angeles has changed in the three decades between the first movie and its sequel, a new clip from the film suggests that we may go beyond the borders of the city…and it’s not pretty!

Deadline debuted the above preview scene, which appears to take place early in the film. In the footage, Ryan Gosling‘s LAPD Officer K enters a child sweatshop run by a character played by Lennie James. Officer K doesn’t appear to have any backup, and James’ character seems to be surprised that anyone would try to take him down after others “bigger than you” have failed.

Here’s the intriguing part of that scene: the kids are all creating tech for the spaceships that are sending people off-world. The recently released prequel short, Blade Runner 2036, featured Jared Leto‘s Niander Wallace as he successfully argued that new Replicants were necessary for humanity’s survival in the off-world colonies. This suggests that we may actually see life in space at some point in the film.

It’s not entirely clear how Harrison Ford‘s Rick Deckard will factor into this story, but the previously released trailers have indicated that he went into hiding because he was being hunted. Once Officer K finds Deckard, he’s going to be hunted as well. The real question is why? What does Deckard know that makes him so dangerous to the powers that be? We’ll find out when Blade Runner 2049 opens in theaters on Friday, October 6.
