Following the end of Arrow last year, The CW has announced that Supergirl is the next DC Comics series hanging up its cape. Via Deadline, the upcoming sixth season of Supergirl will be the show’s last. The show’s final run will consist of 20 episodes and will start airing in January. The final season of the Melissa Benoist-starring show will be longer in episode count than usual seasons on The CW. Supergirl is only now starting filming again, after their previous seasons were cut short due to the pandemic.
Deadline speculates the show ending is the result of a mutual decision. “Between the delays and Supergirl’s downward ratings trajectory, I hear the producers, the studio, the network and Benoist came to a decision that it was better to end the show with a longer final season.”

Supergirl originally premiered on CBS in the 2015-2016 season, only to move to the CW for year two. DC Comics TV guru Greg Berlanti produces the series. So the move allowed for the show to officially become part of his overall Arrowverse. Supergirl participated in frequent crossovers with the various Arroweverse shows like The Flash. The show about Kara Zor-El even had a musical crossover episode with The Flash in 2017.
The show has had its share of cast shake-ups since its early days. Since the first season, regulars like Calista Flockhart (Cat Grant), Mehcad Brooks (James Olsen) and Jeremy Jordan (Winn Schott) have all departed. Besides Benoist, only David Harewood (J’onn J’onzz) and Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers) are the only original series regulars still around.

However, this will not be the end of the Supergirl family on The CW. Superman and Lois, a spin-off of Supergirl, debuts next season. Supergirl introduced the Tyler Hoechlin version of Kal-El in season two; he appeared several times since then. Several Supergirl supporting cast members will likely transition to the Superman and Lois spin-off. It would especially make sense for Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor to make life miserable for the Man of Steel, just as he has for his cousin. And unless they plan to kill off Kara Zor-El in her series finale, I would not be shocked to see Kara make semi-regular visits to see her cousin Clark. I have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of the Girl of Steel.
