Any workplace sitcom from the people responsible for NBC’s The Office will come with out-of-this-world expectations. So it’s only fitting that Steve Carell and Greg Daniels have created a show called Space Force. Netflix’s upcoming series is based on the real plans for an intergalactic branch of the U.S. military. And as the first trailer for the show proves, there’s no limit to how stupid the government can be. That might not be great news for American citizens, but it’s pretty fantastic for viewers.

“A decorated pilot with dreams of running the Air Force, four-star general Mark R. Naird (Steve Carell) is thrown for a loop when he finds himself tapped to lead the newly formed sixth branch of the US Armed Forces: Space Force. Skeptical but dedicated, Mark uproots his family and moves to a remote base in Colorado where he and a colorful team of scientists and ‘Spacemen’ are tasked by the White House with getting American boots on the moon (again) in a hurry and achieving total space dominance.”

Some might have expected Space Force to give us Michael Scott in a uniform. However, the show’s debut trailer makes it clear Steve Carell is not simply placing that character in a new setting. General Mark. R. Naird seems highly competent and self-aware. It’s his work environment and task that is incredibly stupid. (People need paper. We don’t need a space army.) That’s where the show will look to mine is comedy. Netflix bills the satire as “a new kind of workplace comedy, where the stakes are sky high and the ambitions even higher.”

Space Force might be based on a ridiculous idea. But that’s also exactly why we’re excited for it. Well, the fictional version at least.

Space Force also stars John Malkovich, Diana Silvers, Tawny Newsome, Ben Schwartz also star, alongside co-stars Lisa Kudrow, Jimmy O. Yang, Noah Emmerich, Alex Sparrow, and Don Lake. It comes to Netflix on May 29.
