It’s been over a year since the first season Star Trek: Picard came to an end. Fans have been waiting with bated breath for any news of season two ever since. Of course, we know that the pandemic kept production from going forward for some time. But now, it’s official. Production has commenced on Star Trek: Picard season two, and thanks to First Contact Day, we have our very first teaser trailer.

The teaser trailer was introduced by Sir Patrick Stewart himself, at the start of today’s First Contact Day virtual panels. The panel also revealed that season two will premiere in 2022. Actor John de Lancie made a surprise appearance during the panel, too. He confirmed that he will appear in season two as his iconic character Q. Season two also sees the return of Alison Pill, Isa Briones, Evan Evagora, Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, Jeri Ryan, Orla Brady, and Brent Spiner.

The teaser gives us only a little bit to glimpse. We see Picard’s office, with evidence of his storied past. A portrait of the Enterprise-D, a model of his old ship the Stargazer, and a a deck of cards recalling poker games played by the crew. And of course, a voiceover from Q, from the final episode of TNG, saying, “The trial never ends.”

Will see see other beloved Next Generation characters in season two? In the show’s first season, we got to see Data in a major role, played once again by Brent Spiner. We also saw the return of and Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) and Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes). Last year, Patrick Stewart formally invited Whoopi Goldberg to join him in season two as her TNG character of Guinan. So we can expect to see Whoopi in those wild hats she wore back in the day one more time.

No word yet on returns for Doctor Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton), Geordi La Forge (Levar Burton), or Worf (Michael Dorn). But we expect there are many surprises yet in store for season two that we haven’t been made aware of yet. We just can’t wait to return to the 24th century next year.
