I’m not losing my mind just because weeks of quarantine are turning into months. But I do fear I’m days away from honestly answering the next person who asks, “How ya holding up?” No one wants to know that. Trust me. Every day gets longer and slower, as this repetitive existence grows ever more tiresome. But it wasn’t like that initially. Staying home has been a whole process unto itself, one that will be hard to explain to future generations who didn’t live through it. Heck, it’s hard to explain to each other now. Humans aren’t built to be apart from one another for this long. Maybe that’s why the best primer on what this pandemic has actually been like has come from a show about aliens trapped on Earth. The latest promo for Hulu‘s upcoming animated series Solar Opposites perfectly captures the six stages of social distancing.
Including the part where we turn our couch into a dance floor.
Solar Opposites, “about a family of aliens trying to fit in on this human-infested crap-hole of a planet called Earth,” is the new series from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. The newest trailer for the show features never-before-seen clips that perfectly explain our own lives the last couple months, as living through COVID-19 has been a real roller coaster. The six stages of social distancing essentially boil down to:
1) Discovering and consuming new TV shows
2) Finding new hobbies
3) Trying to move as little as possible
4) Crushing angst over our cancelled life plans
5) Couch dance party
6) Losing all sense of time and trying to burrow into the ground to escape the hell that is our current reality
Gotta admit it. They NAILED IT.
Fortunately whatever stage seven brings it will include Solar Opposites, because the show, one of our most highly anticipated debuts of 2020, premieres on Hulu on May 8.
Ask me how I’m holding up then, because the answer will be “better.” Hopefully.
