I’m not much for true crime podcasts. I am very much a Steve Martin and Martin Short fan though. And the latter might soon make me a fan of the former. They two comedy legends are teaming up with Selena Gomez for a new murder-mystery series at Hulu. And the latest trailer for Only Murders in the Building makes the case for why amateurs hunting a killer can lead to some killer humor.
Nathan Lane. Jane Lynch. Amy Ryan. They’re all major suspects as far as we’re concerned. But if the murderer ends up to be Sting—not the guy from U2, I think that’s Simon Le Bon—this show has a chance to be an all-timer. That would be amazing and we really hope Sting killed that guy. A sentiment we never would have imagined saying.
The show’s official synopsis also gives viewers an idea of the silliness behind the series:
“Only Murders In The Building follows three strangers who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio suspects murder and employs their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth. As they record a podcast of their own to document the case, the three unravel the complex secrets of the building which stretch back years. Perhaps even more explosive are the lies they tell one another. Soon, the endangered trio comes to realize a killer might be living amongst them as they race to decipher the mounting clues before it’s too late.”
A perfect premise and a perfect cast.
Only Murders in the Building comes from from Steve Martin, Dan Fogelman, and John Hoffman. Martin and Hoffman also executive produce, along with Short, Gomez, Jamie Babbit, Fogelman, and Jess Rosenthal. The show comes to Hulu August 31.
That’s a lot longer than I’d like to wait. Anyone know any true crime podcasts I can listen to in the meantime? Preferably funny ones that star comedy icons.
