Tis’ the spooky season, which means like any good mayor we started prepping for it last November 1. But once again our 2020 Halloween plans have been totally upended. Only this time the reason why is actually something to celebrate. Because even though we’ll be stuck at home this year, we’ll be having a whole lot of fun celebrating. All while doing a whole lot of good. Broadway stars will host a virtual The Nightmare Before Christmas benefit on October 31.
The Actors Fund and the Lymphoma Research Foundation have announced (in news we first learned about at io9) that they will hold a “ one-night-only Halloween benefit concert presentation” of Tim Burton’s dual-holiday stop-motion animated classic.
Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart will present the special evening “of music, storytelling and Halloween fun” in cooperation with Burton, Danny Elfman, and Disney Music Group. Iglehart, who won a Tony Award for playing Aladdin’s Genie, and other Broadway stars will use “items and clothing found around their house combined with their imaginations” to bring the show to life. This will be both a fun evening and a safe one.
The rest of the cast includes: Rafael Casal (Blindspotting, Bad Education), Adrienne Warren (Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Bring It On: The Musical), Danny Burstein (Moulin Rouge!, My Fair Lady), Nik Walker (Ain’t Too Proud, Hamilton), Lesli Margherita (Dames at Sea, Matilda), Rob McClure (Mrs. Doubtfire, Beetlejuice), and more.
“We are extremely grateful to Tim Burton, Danny Elfman and the Disney Music Group for allowing us the opportunity to bring our concert interpretation of The Nightmare Before Christmas to everyone this Halloween,” said Iglehart in a statement.
The event will stream on Halloween night, Saturday, October 31, at 7 pm ET. Tickets are $4.99 and can be purchased now. All proceeds will go to both organizations. We might not be able to trick-or-treat or go to any costume parties this year like we planned. But this will still be a great way to celebrate Halloween while helping some great causes.
