It’s a tale as old as time: a teen falls in love with someone from the wrong family. Of course, it’s a little more complicated when you’re a vampire and said love interest is from a family of vampire hunters. That’s the conflict at the center of Victoria “V.E.” Schwab’s short story “First Kill,” which Netflix is adapting into a TV series.

The queer love story follows Juliette and Calliope (a.k.a. Cal) whose budding love story is made a bit more complicated by the fact that they’re, in theory, natural enemies. Juliette’s a vampire from a very powerful vamp family. Cal’s a budding hunter from a legendary monster hunting family. And at this moment, it’s time for each to make their first kill. Netflix released the trailer for First Kill, which teases young love, family obligations, and a whole lot of messy murder.

This certainly looks like the perfect series to kick off summer with. Forbidden love with a (literally) monstrous twist is always a good time. It further ups the already high stakes—unfortunately, pun intended. Plus, we’re massive fans of Schwab at Nerdist, so we’re already very intrigued.

Here’s First Kill‘s official logline:

When it’s time for teenage vampire Juliette to make her first kill so she can take her place among a powerful vampire family, she sets her sights on a new girl in town named Calliope. But much to Juliette’s surprise, Calliope is a vampire hunter, from a family of celebrated slayers. Both find that the other won’t be so easy to kill and, unfortunately, way too easy to fall for…

Sarah Catherine Hook plays Juliette, while Imani Lewis is Calliope. Elizabeth Mitchell, Aubin Wise, Gracie Dzienny, Dominic Goodman, Phillip Mullings, Jr., and Jason R. Moore round out the First Kill cast.

Season one of First Kill consists of eight episodes. Felicia D. Henderson is showrunner, writer and executive producer, while Schwab is also writing and executive producing.

First Kill debuts on June 10, 2022.
