It’s weird to say, but the biggest complaint television viewers have in the year 2019 is that there are too many good TV shows. Peak TV has surely been both a blessing and a curse. How then can the latest streaming site to enter the already overcrowded entertainment field make a mark? By putting together an absolutely amazing cast and starting their story with a timely social movement currently affecting the entire industry. That’s what happens in the first trailer for Apple TV’s new series The Morning Show, which stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell, who gets “canceled” from the show-within-a-show.

“What happens when the people you trust to tell the truth prove themselves to be dishonest? The Morning Show follows the free fall of an early morning newscast in the wake of a scandal, and its struggle to survive in an era when news arrives in the palm of your hand.”

This first look at a “new era” for the fictional The Morning Show opens with Steve Carell’s Mitch Kessler being fired after 15 years as a host. While the specific reason for his canning isn’t given, this promo certainly feels related to the Me Too movement and the ousting of Matt Lauer from NBC’s Today.

Most of the trailer though focuses on the other veteran host of the show Alex Levy, played by Jennifer Aniston. She must deal both with the fallout of her disgraced ex-partner’s exit and a network executive hoping to replace her with the younger, and seemingly edgier, journalist Bradley Jackson, played by Reese Witherspoon. There seems to be something else going on here as well, but it’s impossible to know who to trust.

The show also stars Billy Crudup (Almost Famous), Mark Duplass (Togetherness), and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Black Mirror), with six episodes directed by Mimi Leder (On the Basis of Sex), and written by Kerry Ehrin (Bates Motel). Apple TV ordered two seasons of the show, each for 10 episodes, and it premieres on the new streaming site this fall.

And just think, if you watch it, it will be like getting two shows for the time of one. That’s a pretty good deal in the Peak TV era.
