For years moviegoers have joked that Tom Cruise seems determined to die doing what he loves: making movies. Despite being one of the biggest stars in the world, he insists on doing most of his own stunts no matter how dangerous they may be. So far he’s survived them all, but that doesn’t mean he’s not still trying. The first incredible trailer for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One features Cruise driving a motorcycle off a mountain. But don’t worry. Since they’re still calling this “part one” we’re pretty certain he survived that epic leap. Unfortunately we’re going to be waiting a long time to know for sure.

Normally we’d end a post like this with the film’s release date. But we have to mention it now, because it’s outrageous Paramount would give us a trailer this good, for one of the best franchise’s in the world, only to tell us we have to wait more than a year to see it. July 2023? As in the summer after the summer that hasn’t even really started yet? Like we said, outrageous.

Despite being the first look at a film 13 months before it premieres, there’s surprisingly a whole lot going on here. We get a ton of looks at franchise newcomer Hayley Atwell. There are glimpses of returning stars, like Vanessa Kirby and Henry Czerny’s Eugene Kittridge. Czerny is reprising his role from the original film. He’s back to tell Cruise’s unflappable M:I agent that it’s time to choose. Though the offer Kittridge makes doesn’t sound like the kind Ethan will accept. Whether his own country or another, Ethan Hunt will never allow someone to control the entire world.

His team is back to help in the international fight, which will take the crew across the globe. Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, and Ving Rhames are all on the job once more. The film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, also stars Pom Klementieff, Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, and Angela Bassett.

July 2023 is a long way away. Too long to wait for this movie. But if Tom Cruise can survive driving a motorcycle off a mountain this wait won’t kill us.
