Are you still recovering from Hereditary? We’re still recovering from Hereditary. Last summer’s breakout horror hit was director Ari Aster’s feature film debut, a generational story about grief, ritual, and the terrors we foist on the people we love. It was a breathless piece of horror genius, and it made us super stoked – if not a little terrified – to see what else Aster has up his sleeve.

Luckily, we don’t have to wait long. His second feature, Midsommar, comes out this summer, and A24 has just released the first teaser trailer for the film. It looks appropriately beautiful and horrific!

Here’s the official plot synopsis from A24: “A couple’s vacation to a Swedish village takes a sinister turn when the insular townspeople invite them into a series of rituals that render their pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving, in this dread-soaked and viscerally disquieting psychological thriller.” That sounds about on-par with what he see going on here. Florence Pugh and Jack Raynor play the unlucky couple, with an ensemble cast that also includes Bandersnatch‘s Will Poulter and The Good Place‘s William Jackson Harper.

As with Hereditary, the visuals in this trailer are remarkable. Aster has a an eye for color and a clear interest in occultist symbols. (We’ll probably spend the rest of the day Googling all of the runes on display.) It also looks like Aster has replaced tongue clicks with guttural breaths; the former played a percussionist role in Hereditary‘s trailers, and the latter is doing a similar thing for Midsommar. The breaths appear to be part of the ritual for this mysterious nine-day festival, which also includes bear intestines and freaky baptisms. Sounds like a good time!

So far, Midsommar is giving us major Wicker Man vibes. Let’s hope it skews more 1973 original and less 2006 Nicolas Cage remake.
