Actor Michael C. Hall is maybe best known for the title role on Dexter, and his role on Six Feet Under just prior to that. But before landing those two television roles, Hall was already an accomplished stage performer, and when Dexter finished its run back in 2013, he rocked the world of Broadway once again when he took over the lead role in the rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
The music of David Bowie was a huge influence on the creation of Hedwig, so it’s only fitting that as his Hedwig follow-up, Hall chose Bowie’s Lazarus, which itself was a musical version of the artist’s ’70s sci-fi film The Man Who Fell to Earth.Late last year, Michael C. Hall appeared on several talk shows, seemingly possessed by the performing spirit of Bowie… and this is before the legendary musician had passed away from cancer. He first did a Bowie-infused performance on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and in the months since then, he stayed in Bowie-mode through his starring role in Lazarus and even an appearance at a Radiohead tribute concert.
Thanks to Consequence of Sound, we know have video of Hall again giving us his very best Bowie, this time for the 2016 Mercury Prize Gala, which awards the year’s best album from the UK. Bowie’s final album, Blackstar, was among the finalists, and Hall was on hand to perform the album track “Lazarus”. You can watch Hall’s performance of “Lazarus” in the video down below.
